JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team tried to weather a tough Belhaven squad, but came up short, 93-70 inside a raucous Hangar Dome on Wednesday.
Rising freshman
Cameron Lumar netted 23 points (11-14 FT) and five rebounds to lead the way offensively in the home opener.
Sophomore
Dakota Gasca (nine points, four assists, two steals, three rebounds) was everywhere on the court. Classmates
Rodney Phillips Jr. chipped in 11 points and
RJ VanBeber sank a career-high eight points off the bench.
Belhaven (3-0) outscored the Majors in the paint (46-30) and utilized a 21-9, points-off-turnover margin to their advantage. The Blazers held a 44.8 percent to 37.5 percent edge in field-goal percentage.
The visitors started quickly to secure an 8-3 advantage out of the gates. Phillips Jr. would answer with a layup and Gasca would drain a three-pointer to bring the game level.
The Blazers would then methodically build a solid margin, leading 45-27 at intermission.
Millsaps would battle back to cut the deficit to 12 points, five minutes into the second half following three Lumar free throws and later a three-point make.
The Blazers would build their edge to 28 points with 5:26 remaining and hold on for a 93-70 decision.
The Majors will now trek to Memphis to compete in the Rhodes College Classic, beginning with the University of the Ozarks on Saturday at 3 p.m.
