Women’s Basketball Drops St. Thomas, 71-62 in Millsaps Fall Classic Opener

Haley Franklin Posted 22 Points, Garin Freeman Added 16 in Saturday Triumph

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team did not hold back as they downed the University of St. Thomas, 71-62 in the Millsaps Fall Classic inside the Hangar Dome on Saturday.
 
Junior Haley Franklin tallied 22 points, eight rebounds and three assists while shooting 8-for-13 from the field. Freshman Garin Freeman posted 16 points, two steals and four assists, while senior Helena Roe recorded 10 points, two assist, two steals and three blocks.
 
Millsaps led the Celts in bench points (38-32), second-chance points (16-12), points in the paint (34-26) and on the Fastbreak (16-7). St. Thomas used an 83.3 percent efficiency from the free-throw line (15-of-18) to hang close.
 
The first quarter was a defensive battle as both teams were held to low scoring figures.
 
Freshman Tia Anderson would tally a three-pointer with 43 seconds remaining in the first quarter to push Millsaps ahead, 12-7.
 
In the second quarter, the Majors led continued to grow. Roe dominated the court with a nifty jumper and pair of treys, pushing Millsaps ahead, 20-9.
 
Not stopping there, Franklin would connect from long range to make it a 31-22 advantage at intermission.
 
Freeman secured a jumper to give the Majors their largest lead of the contest at 42-27 with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.
 
The Celts would prove resilient and cut the Major cushion down to three points with 1:29 left in the same quarter.
 
A Garin layup and two Novak free throws would lift the Majors into the final quarter leading, 53-46.
 
Junior Emily Adams later nailed a huge three-pointer to grow the Millsaps advantage back up to 12 points with 6:53 to go.
 
St. Thomas would cut the stall the Majors with fouls, but only manage to make it a seven-point contest on two remaining occasions.
 
As the game wound down, the Majors sunk five consecutive free throws to pull away from the Celts and triumph, 71-62.
 
The Majors will continue the Millsaps Fall Classic, hosting the University of Dallas on Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
