JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps volleyball team looked well prepared against local rival Belhaven, sweeping the Blazers (25-16, 25-8, 25-22) at the Heidelberg Gymnasium on Thursday.
Junior
Anna Capezzera tallied 14 kills and nine digs to reach 500 career kills. Classmate
Zoe Elder finished with 23 assists, sophomore
Mallory Richardson added 11 kills, while senior
Margaret Richardson led the team with 19 digs. Senior
Brenna Macaluso tallied 11 digs and recorded a career-high seven aces.
In the first set, the Majors took an early 13-8 lead. Millsaps would then use a pair of 3-0 bursts to lead 20-11. In control, the Blazers created a service error and Macaluso added an ace to close the opening set at 25-16.
The second set saw the Majors dominating with leads of 4-0 and 14-6. Belhaven had no answers as Millsaps rattled off the final nine points to win the set, 25-8.
In set three, the teams would trade points and saw Belhaven trailing, 5-4. The deficit would grow to 10-4, which was punctuated by an Elder kill.
Trailing 21-17, the Blazers would battle back to hold a narrow, 22-21 cushion. Baer would tie it with a kill and the Majors would regain the advantage with a Belhaven attack error.
Macaluso would provide another ace and Capezzera would wrap up the night with her 500th collegiate kill, giving the Majors a 25-22 triumph and season sweep.
Millsaps next travels to Irving, Texas to conclude the regular season against the University of Dallas and Austin College on Saturday. Matches are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively with live video available at gomajors.com.
