JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team fought hard on the court but were bested by Huntingdon, 87-56 inside the Hangar Dome on Wednesday.
Huntingdon (4-4) outnumbered the Majors in fast-break points (18-10), points in the paint (44-24) and several other offensive categories.
Junior
Drew Roth powered the Majors with 10 points, five rebounds and one block. Sophomore
Dakota Gasca posted 10 points, three rebounds and one steal, while senior
TJ Hogan matched a career-high nine points.
The first half saw the lead traded five times. Sophomore
Rodney Phillips Jr. and Hogan would push the Majors ahead, 8-4 with back-to-back jumpers.
Millsaps continued attacking as Hogan netted a three-pointer to give the Majors a 13-8 lead midway through the opening half.
Millsaps would find further success from long range when Roth hit back-to-back treys to push Millsaps ahead, 19-11 moments later.
Huntingdon clawed back before a Gasca layup gave the Majors the lead back at 22-21 with 3:24 to play.
The Hawks would soon stretch their lead by four, but senior
Aaron Ursin would keep the game closer by sinking a hook shot with 24 seconds on the clock. Huntingdon then netted the last jumper to go into halftime leading, 28-24.
In the second half, Huntingdon would heat up and connect on 50 percent of its field goals (25-of-50) to pull away and claim an 87-56 decision.
