BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps baseball team played a pair of ranked foes over the weekend, but fell in both games in the BSC Spring Classic at Striplin Field. No. 4 Birmingham-Southern downed the Majors, 11-7 on Saturday and No. 2 LaGrange bested Millsaps, 7-3 on Sunday.
Game 1: 11-7, L
Graduate
Chris Hart hit 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs and a walk, while senior
Joshua Laurent posted two RBIs. The underclassmen pair of
EJ Ousley (2-4, one run, one RBI) and
Zac Farris (2-3, two runs, one walk) were also productive offensively.
On the mound, junior
Jackson Hood pitched five innings and allowed five runs, five hits, two walks, while striking out three. Freshman
Gavin Tranchina struck out all three batters in one inning of relief.
The game went scoreless for three innings before the Panthers tallied a run in both the fourth and fifth. BSC exploded for nine more runs to grab an 11-0 lead after six innings.
Millsaps would respond with a big inning of its own, platting five runs in the seventh. Ousley would get the Majors on the scoreboard with an RBI single, scoring freshman
Mason Morgan from second. Hart then scored Ousley and Farris who had advanced into scoring position.
After a sophomore
Bradley Pelle walk with two outs, Laurent doubled down the right field line scoring Hart and Pelle.
Trailing 11-5 in the ninth, Farris would lead off the inning with a single and advance to second on a wild pitch. Hart then doubled to push Farris home, and would reach third on a passed ball. Pelle posted an RBI single for the final tally of the game as the Majors would threaten with two on base, but ultimately fell short off the comeback.
Game 2: 7-3, L
Hart, senior
Austin Arceneaux, and junior
Case Page each recorded a hit and an RBI on Sunday.
The Majors tallied the first run in the game in the top of the third inning courtesy of Hart's RBI single, plating junior
Jackson Ware from third. LaGrange then scored three runs in the fourth and once more in the fourth to claim a 4-1 advantage.
Millsaps would fight back into the game in the eighth. Farris would begin the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch. He then reached third base on a senior
Sam Pitre single as well as a Pelle fielder's choice. Arceneaux would single home Farris in the next at bat. The final run of the inning resulted from a Page single through the left side to score Pelle.
LaGrange would retaliate with three runs in their half of the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Millsaps will be back in action as the face Belhaven in Game One of Cowboy Maloney Series. The matchup will take place at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss., beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Live video will be available at gomajors.com.
