DANVILLE, Ky. – The No. 3-seed Millsaps women's basketball team's strong season came to a close after falling to No. 2-seed Rhodes, 72-62 in the SAA Semifinal inside Alumni Gym on Saturday. The top seed Centre College played host to the event.
Sophomore
Haley Franklin ended with a team-high 15 points (11-13 free throws) to go along with seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Franklin finishes with a pair of Millsaps single-season program records, including points scored (514) and free throws made (156).
She also now sits second in scoring average (19 ppg), free throws attempted (212) and third for field goals made (176). Her point total, free throw conversions and attempts are currently ranked first in the conference and also across the 11 NCAA schools competing in Mississippi.
Additionally, the Baton Rouge, La. product set a program-high when she posted 35 points against St. Thomas on Nov. 20.
Junior
Helena Roe garnered a double-double on Saturday with 14 points, 10 rebounds and added a steal.
Rising freshman
Elyse Warren nearly generated a double-double of her own with nine points and nine rebounds.
Millsaps (19-8, 9-5 SAA) would outscore the Lynx bench, 28-19 and outrebound their opponents, 42-34.
Rhodes (16-11, 10-4 SAA) though took advantage of a 17-10 turnover advantage and converted the takeaways into an 18-3 points-off turnover margin.
Both defenses were stout as Millsaps shot 33.3 percent (16-48) and Rhodes finished 38.3 percent (23-60) from the floor. The game featured nine ties and eight lead changes.
The Lynx would score the first basket, but Millsaps responded for the next eight points. Rhodes rallied to hold a narrow 16-14 edge after the first quarter.
Freshman
Rachel Pflum would hit a three-pointer to give the Majors the lead back at 27-26 with four minutes remaining. Rhodes would sink a three-pointer in response in the final minute of the half to lead 35-33 at intermission.
After a senior
Devan Caldwell layup tied the game at 35-35, Rhodes led between 1-7 points during the third quarter.
Entering the fourth down 56-50, Warren would net a free throw followed by an and-one conversion to make it 56-54 Rhodes in the opening minute.
The Lynx would respond with six points and lead, 62-54 with five minutes remaining. Both teams then traded free throws before sophomore
Whitney Novak made a jumper to cut the deficit to 65-58 with 3:10 remaining.
The remainder of the game saw the defenses hold the other team scoreless from the field and only free throws would add to the final score. Rhodes would make enough free throws to hang on for a 72-62 semifinal win.
Millsaps will now await the unveiling of the All-SAA Teams as well as individual conference accolades in the upcoming days.
