SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps baseball program's offense could not be stopped as the Majors swept Sewanee, 11-8, 5-1 and 16-14 at Montgomery Field over the weekend, totaling 32 runs in 25 innings.
Game 1: 11-8, W
Senior
Austin Arceneaux finished with a career-high five hits (5-5) to go along with one run and one RBI. Both sophomore
Bradley Pelle (3-4, three runs, two RBIs) and senior
Sam Pitre (3-6, one run) ended with three hits. Graduate
Chris Hart (2-5, walk) also scored three times. Millsaps totaled 18 hits as a team.
Freshman
Stewart Bonnecaze finished with 4.0 IP and six strikeouts against six runs, three hits and three walks. Classmate
Taylor Lowe struck out two in one inning of relief (one hit, one run, two walks). Sophomore
Nick Tarantino closed the final four innings for the save, striking out six. He held the Tigers to one run, two walks and three hits.
The Majors jumped on Sewanee early with five runs in the first, three in the second and one in the third inning to build a 9-0 advantage. The Tigers would claw back with eight runs total over the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, including a five-run fifth.
Millsaps would add two crucial tallies in the eighth to create distance again at 11-8. Hart led off the inning with a double and would score following a ground out and passed ball. Pelle then added a solo home run for what ultimately was the game's final run.
Tarantino shut down Sewanee in the bottom of the eighth and sat the Tigers down 1-2-3 in the ninth for the Game One victory.
Game 2: 5-1, W (7 inn.)
Senior
Wil Wood tossed a complete seven innings, striking out five and holding the Tigers to one run in Game Two on Saturday. He walked two batters and allowed just four hits.
Arceneaux (1-3) posted his first Millsaps home run along with three RBIs and a run scored. Junior
Jackson Ware also homered, hitting 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The rematch was a different story from the first game as both teams were held to four hits apiece in seven innings.
Sewanee did score first with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. After freshman
EJ Ousley reached base in the second off a hit by pitch, Ware powered a two-run shot to give the Majors a 2-1 lead.
Both teams would go scoreless until the sixth inning when Arceneaux made a huge impact. With two outs, Pelle singled and junior
Case Page was hit by a pitch. Arceneaux then sailed a three-run homer to extend the Major edge to 5-1.
Wood cemented the triumph with three strikeouts and a double play over the last two innings.
Game 3: 16-14, W
Sunday saw an offensive slugfest in which the teams combined for 30 runs and 35 hits. Junior
Jackson Hood struck out four Tigers in 5.2 IP against six runs allowed. Sophomore
Will Norris earned the save in 0.2 IP with one strikeout and one hit against.
Hart (3-4, home run, four RBIs, four runs), Page (3-3, four RBIs, two HBPs) and Pitre (4-6, three RBIs, three runs, two doubles) all recorded at least three RBIs. The four RBIs set a career high for Page and tied Hart's personal best.
The last time the Majors scored 16 runs was against Centre during the 2022 SAA Baseball Tournament
on April 29. Millsaps accumulated 19 hits on Sunday, which is the highest since that very same meeting with Centre when the Majors generated 20 hits.
Hart led off the game with home run on the very first pitch to start the scoring barrage. Sewanee answered with a solo homer of their own in the bottom of the frame. Millsaps recaptured the lead in the second when Ware scored off a passed ball and Hart added a sacrifice fly.
Sewanee scored once in the third and four times in the sixth to push ahead, 6-3. Millsaps then tallied five runs in the seventh before Sewanee added three scores, clinging to a 9-8 edge.
Millsaps scored four more in the top of the eighth to go back on top. Pitre doubled down the right-field line to plate freshman
Mason Morgan. After Pelle was intentionally walked, Page doubled along the left-field chalk, bringing home Hart and Pitre. Arceneaux then singled home Pelle from third.
The Tigers cut the deficit to 12-10 with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Millsaps added four critical insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Pelle would double home junior
David Abbadessa and Hart. The final two runs came from a Page sacrifice fly and an Ousley single to left field.
The hosts would tack on four runs to make it a 16-14 Major advantage, but ended the game in a double play.
Millsaps will next host Belhaven in the decisive Game Three of the Cowboy Maloney Series, beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com.
