JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball program finished Alumni Weekend with a thrilling, 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Oglethorpe at Twenty Field on Sunday.
Freshman
EJ Ousley batted 2-4 with two runs scored and a double. Junior
Case Page finished 2-4 with an RBI and scored a run.
Sophomore
Nick Tarantino pitched 2.1 innings with three strikeouts (two hits against, one run), while freshman
Ryan Laiche earned the save with the final strikeout. A total of 14 Major pitchers toed the rubber in the victory.
The Stormy Petrels scored first in the second inning, but Millsaps would answer back in the third with a sacrifice fly from senior
Sam Pitre, scoring Ousley.
Oglethorpe would take a 2-1 lead over the Majors in the top of the fifth, but junior
Jackson Ware made a sensational diving catch in center to stop the threat further.
Millsaps would claim a 3-2 edge moments later when Hart doubled home Ousley and Page brought Hart to the plate with an RBI single.
The Stormy Petrels loaded the bases in the seventh, but we're kept at bay. However, the visitors sailed a three-run homer over the left field fence to grab a 5-3 advantage in the top of the eighth.
The Majors needing a response tallied three runs of their own in their half of the eighth. Freshman
Mason Morgan singled home Page to begin the comeback with the bases loaded. Senior
Joshua Laurent followed with a hot shot to third base, scoring freshman pinch runner
Johnny Morreale. Millsaps would advance another runner home courtesy of an error created off Hart's bat, regaining a 6-5 lead for the Majors.
With two runners on and one out in the ninth, Oglethorpe had an incredible opportunity to tie the game. A relay play from center field to short stop to second base caught a runner in a pickle. Hart, who had moved over to second base defensively, tossed the ball to Morgan who made a tag at the plate.
Laiche entered with the bases loaded and two outs. He only needed three pitches to strike out the opponent, securing a 6-5 triumph and series sweep.
The Majors are next scheduled to play a best-of-three series in the SAA Baseball Tournament, beginning on Friday. Millsaps will travel to Memphis to face No. 3 seed Rhodes, April 28-30, with start times being released shortly. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
