Baseball Falls to No. 9 BSC in SAA Championship Weekend Opener

Majors Next Face Centre at 3:15 p.m. on Friday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. The Millsaps baseball team was defeated by No. 9 nationally ranked and No. 1 seed Birmingham-Southern, 11-1 in seven innings in the opening game of SAA Championship Weekend at Striplin Field on Thursday.

Graduate Chris Hart recorded a hit, stolen base and RBI, while sophomore Bradley Pelle notched a hit and scored the Major run. Senior Joshua Laurent, sophomore Zac Farris and freshman EJ Ousley also recorded hits.

BSC led off the second inning with a walk and steal of second base. The lead-off man reached third on a wild pitch and scored the game's first run courtesy of a sacrifice fly. The hosts later doubled to make it 2-0 advantage in the same frame.

Millsaps answered back by placing two of their first three batters on base with a walk in the third inning. Hart singled to left center and brought home Pelle from second, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Senior Branyan Bounds looked poised to tie the game in the fourth, but flied out to the deepest part of the ballpark to end the top of the inning.

The Panthers extended their lead back to two runs in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff, solo home run.

The Majors followed with back-to-back hits in the fifth and two runners later reached scoring position with one out. Pelle attempted to score from third on an infield fielder's choice, but was thrown out at home. A couple batters later the inning ended on a fly out.

BSC made it a 5-1 game in the bottom of the inning with a triple which was followed by a two-run homer. The Panthers added six more tallies in the sixth to push ahead, 11-1. The game ended in the seventh due to the 10-run rule.

The Majors will look to stave off elimination by facing No. 2 seed Centre at 3:15 p.m. on Friday. The winner of that elimination game is scheduled to play again at 6:30 p.m., weather permitting. Live video and live stats will be available for all the Millsaps contests at gomajors.com.
