Volleyball Splits Pair of SAA Home-Opening Matches

Hendrix Downs Millsaps 3-0, Majors Best Rhodes in Four Sets over the Weekend

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps volleyball team (7-6, 1-2 SAA) split two SAA matches over the weekend inside the Hangar Dome. Hendrix swept the Majors in three closely contested sets (21-25, 21-25, 23-25) on Saturday, while Millsaps got the best of Rhodes in four sets (25-23, 25-27, 25-16, 25-19) on Sunday.

Match 1: Hendrix 3, Millsaps 0

(21-25, 21-25, 23-25)

Senior Brenna Macaluso posted nine kills and 12 digs and junior Zoe Elder recorded a double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs. Senior Margaret Richardson led the Majors with 16 digs.

The first set was a close affair with nine ties and four lead changes. Millsaps utilized an early 4-0 run to hold a slim, 5-3 margin early on. Both teams continued tallying points back and forth as the set was knotted up at 15-15.

Hendrix, however, would post four of the next five points to build some breathing room. Junior Anna Capezzera would cut the deficit to 23-20 late with a kill, but the Warriors would claim the first set, 25-21.

Set two was equally as competitive, with both teams accumulating seven ties and five lead swings. With the score tied at 9-9, Hendrix would rush ahead with six of the ensuing seven points. A trio of Warrior errors would bring the Majors back within three points, down 17-14.

Hendrix would later keep the Majors at arm's length and hold a 23-18 advantage. Millsaps would fight back with an Elder kill, Hendrix error and Capezzera kill, but the Warriors would hold on for a 25-21 set two win.

Set three was like a pendulum swing as both programs would record huge rallies. Hendrix raced into a 3-0 and 8-2 lead. The Majors would then attack following a service error and eventually tie the set at 9-9. The Warriors had another response up their sleeves, rallying back for an 8-2 burst.

Millsaps would not give up and later forced four consecutive errors and a Capezzera ace would tie the match at 23-23. A service error and Hendrix kill would help the visitors take the final set, 25-23.

Match 2: Millsaps 3, Rhodes 1

(25-23, 25-27, 25-16, 25-19)

Several Majors had strong statistical days as Elder also recorded her 1,000th career assist in a four-set triumph over Rhodes on Sunday.

Elder (36 assists, 15 digs) and Macaluso (12 kills, 10 digs) posted double-doubles in the match. Macaluso also added seven blocks, while sophomore Ally Baer generated seven kills and a career-best five blocks.

Margaret Richardson posted 19 digs and Capezzera nearly recorded a double-double of her own with nine kills and 16 digs. Freshman Sandy Bourgeois also finished with 16 digs.

Set one saw the Majors tally a crucial comeback late. Rhodes held 9-3 and 13-7 leads in the first set, but the Majors would utilize a pair of 4-0 rallies to cut the lead down to 13-11. Down 22-16, the Majors posted another 4-0 run to pull within three.

Facing a dire situation trailing 23-20, Millsaps would then come to life with a Macaluso kill, trio of Lynx attack errors and a Sandy Bourgeois service ace to brush past the Lynx in the opening set, 25-23.

The second set was a wild one with 12 ties and six changes of the lead. An attack by Capezzera would build a 15-13 lead midway through for the Majors.

Millsaps would hold a slim 24-23 advantage and look to finish the set. However, the visitors tied the match and grabbed a 25-24 edge. An Elder kill would knot things back up, but back-to-back Lynx points would allow Rhodes to tie the match with a 27-25 decision.

Set three saw the Majors regain control following early 6-1 and 11-4 leads. The Lynx struggles continued as Millsaps cemented a 20-11 advantage. A pair of Rhodes ball handling errors and a kill by Mallory Richardson would secure the set three victory for the Majors, 25-16.

In the final set, the teams battled to a 15-15 tie. Millsaps would respond with a crucial 6-0 burst to get much needed space. Macaluso then helped finish off the match with two kills over the final four points. Millsaps claimed the fourth, 25-19 and the SAA triumph.
