MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Millsaps women's basketball team secured their fourth consecutive win and improved to 5-0 in SAA play by knocking down Rhodes, 61-55 inside the Mallory Gymnasium on Friday.
Junior
Haley Franklin recorded 17 points, four assists and five rebounds while accumulating a steal and a block on defense.
Classmate
Emily Adams posted 12 points, two assists, three steals and one rebound. Sophomore
Elyse Warren finished with eight points alongside eight rebounds off the bench.
Millsaps (14-2, 5-0 SAA) won the battle in several statistical categories over Rhodes (8-6, 3-1 SAA), leading 16-9 in points off turnovers and 30-22 inside the paint. The Majors depth again proved important by outscoring the Lynx, 23-14 in bench points.
In the first quarter, Millsaps started off leading 7-1 as senior
Helena Roe dropped a 3-pointer and junior
Whitney Novak added a layup. However midway into the opening frame, Rhodes would net two free throws to pull ahead, 9-8.
Senior
Maddie Howell would step up with a 3-pointer to give Millsaps a 20-15 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
A freshman
Garin Freeman layup put the team out front, 26-20 but Rhodes would soon answer to close the half on an 11-2 run and go into halftime ahead, 31-28.
The third quarter saw teams trade baskets. Adams banked a 3-pointer to tie the game early before a Franklin free throw would help the Majors enter the final frame out front, 48-45.
A pair of Adams free throws and Warren layup with 8:48 left would give the Majors a seven-point margin with a layup. Rhodes would later cut the deficit to 54-51, but Warren would answer with a free throw and Freeman netted a layup to provide a crucial cushion with 4:29 on the clock.
Warren, Adams and Franklin would finish strong at the free-throw line to help hold off the Lynx for the 61-55 triumph.
