JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team was defeated by SAA top-seed Berry, 81-47 inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.
Berry (11-9, 8-1 SAA) used strong interior offense and stingy defense to hold Millsaps (6-14, 5-5 SAA) down offensively.
The Vikings outshot the Majors 50.9 percent (29-of-57) to 30.9 percent (17-of-55). Berry also forced 18 turnovers, which resulted in a 20-5 advantage in points-off turnovers. The visitors also held a 44-14 margin in the paint.
Sophomores
Evan Watson (one rebound) and
RJ VanBeber (two rebounds) both tallied eight points. Watson made his collegiate debut in the contest. VanBeber also converted all three of his field goals, including two from long range.
Juniors
Drew Roth (three rebounds, one assist) and
Nicholas Ughovwa (two blocks, one steal, one rebound) each added seven points.
The teams were closely contested for the majority of the first half. Ughovwa sank a jumper to tie the game at 5-5 before Berry surged forward.
He would net another jumper to cut the deficit down to 27-20 with 3:43 remaining. The Vikings closed the half on an 8-0 run from there to enter halftime ahead, 35-20.
Senior
Aaron Ursin began the second half with a nifty jumper in the paint to attempt the comeback. Classmate
TJ Hogan and freshman
Cameron Lumar also converted jumpers as the teams traded baskets early on.
Berry pulled away with a 12-0 burst to make it a 55-26 game with 13:00 remaining on the clock. The Majors scored the final seven points, but the Vikings were able to secure an 81-47 win.
