DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps volleyball team (15-4, 2-3 SAA) played their best in a thrilling Southern Athletic Association road matchup against Centre College (14-4, 6-0 SAA), but would fall (17-25, 23-25, 25-22, 26-24, 12-15) inside the Alumni Gymnasium on Saturday.
Senior
Anna Capezzera led the way for the Majors with a double-double of 13 kills and 16 digs, while registering two blocks and three assists.
Classmate
Zoe Elder recorded double digits with 37 assists and 16 digs, while collecting five total blocks.
Junior
Mallory Richardson posted 13 kills and three digs alongside two blocks. Classmate
Trista Naquin finished the afternoon with eight kills and four blocks.
Senior
Rylee Stephens accumulated six kills, two blocks and five digs.
Junior
Olivia Danos finished with 13 digs as classmate
Ally Baer highlighted 10 digs, four kills. Sophomore
Sandy Bourgeois contested 16 digs and freshman
Abigail Drury covered 21 digs against the Colonels.
Centre installed a 3-0 run in the opening of the first set. Millsaps would battle back with a 3-1 run. The Colonels would make it 7-3 before Millsaps would call a timeout.
Centre would attack the Majors on two consecutive kills before Millsaps would call another timeout.
Centre would utilize a 6-2 run to move along 23-15. Millsaps would score their last point from a Naquin kill, but the Colonels would attack the Majors with a kill to end the first set in their favor, 25-17.
In the second set, Baer opened up with a block as both teams would begin to exchange points. Capezzera would record two kills moments after.
Centre would make two substitution changes, while Millsaps would attack the hosts on a 4-1 run to capture an 8-6 advantage.
The Colonels would gain their lead back by a narrow 10-9 total on a 4-1 run.
Both teams would trade off points once again midway through the set. Centre recorded two additional kills to take a 20-18 lead before Millsaps would call a timeout. After the timeout, Millsaps would continue fighting with the Colonels.
Naquin would take control of a kill as two service errors and an attack error would be added to the Majors tally with teams tied at 23-23.
As the set reached its end the Colonels posted two consecutive kills to claim the set and take a 2-0 lead.
Needing an answer, Millsaps would keep their foot on gas as a Capezzera and Richardson kills would keep draw the match at 4-4 early.
The Colonels would space out to a 9-5 lead before Millsaps would adjust with a timeout.
After the timeout Stephens would employ a kill and help the Majors recalibrate.
The team would continue to fight as they would rally to a 4-1 run to trail the set, 12-10.
Trailing 17-13, Millsaps raced ahead to 18-17. Now down 20-19, three attack errors and two Capezzera pivotal kills would back in 23-20 in favor of the Majors.
Naquin would finish the rest for her squad with a kill to give the Majors their first set victory, 25-22.
In the fourth set, a kill by Capezzera and Naquin followed by an attack error brought the Majors into an early 4-2 lead.
Millsaps would continue to strike the Colonels as Stephens and Richardson would top the fourth set with two kills.
The Majors would pass the hosts, 8-5 from a service error and Richardson would tally another kill to move Millsaps ahead.
Centre would win a 4-0 run over Millsaps to bring the set back into a 10-9 Colonel favor.
Centre's lead would continue to stretch to 17-13 as Millsaps would call a timeout.
The Majors would garner two kills by Richardson and Stephens to thin the Centre margin to 17-16.
Both teams would continue to balance points back and forth in the bottom of the set as the Majors would close the Colonels on a 7-2 run.
Millsaps fought back from 22-19 and 24-22 deficits to force a fifth set after a 26-24 decision.
In the final set, Centre stood out first with a 3-0 count.
Millsaps would begin to respond with a 4-0 run, following kills from Capezzera and Naquin.
Both teams would exchange points for a long circuit. Capezzera used a kill to give her teammates a one-point advantage at 12-11.
Centre prevented the Majors from scoring again, however. The hosts escaped with a 4-0 run to escape the final set, 15-12.
