Women’s Basketball’s Defense Disrupts MUW in Road Opener, 92-43

Majors Reach Highest and Lowest Point-Scoring Totals Since December 2022 on Friday

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team put on a defensive and offensive clinic in their first road game of the season by taking down MUW, 92-43 inside the Pohl Gymnasium on Friday.

The Majors held the Owls to just three points in the second quarter which was the lowest allowed since Dec. 15, 2022, also at MUW. Millsaps also held the Owls to 12 first-half points on Friday, which was the fewest since the Owls netted 11 points two seasons ago in a 61-23 contest.

Millsaps (2-1) also scored the most points in Columbus since tallying 97 points against Belhaven on Dec. 6, 2022.

Junior Elyse Warren led the Majors with her third double of the season with 17 points, 11 rebounds and one steal, while shooting 6-for-9 from the field.

Senior Haley Franklin tallied 18 points, five assists, two steals, four rebounds and added a block. Sophomore Tia Anderson recorded 11 points, five rebounds and blocked a shot.

Sophomore Garin Freeman (six rebounds, one steal, three assists) and freshman Naomi Berry (one rebound) both accumulated nine points against the Owls.

Senior Whitney Novak finished the night with seven points, six rebounds, three assists, one block and a steal.

Millsaps held the Owls to 7.7 percent shooting (1-of-13) in the second quarter.

The Majors outnumbered MUW, 51-18 in total bench points and 22-9 in second-chance points.

Anderson prompted the Majors with a layup to open the game's scoring. The Majors soon led 6-2 with Freeman adding layup inside the interior of the paint.

The Owls would soon cut the matchup down to one point with a three-pointer at 8-7.

However, a Warren layup punctuated a resounding 16-0 run in response.

Millsaps would finish the first quarter off strong as senior Emily Adams would beat the buzzer with a made layup to continue the Majors lead up to 26-9.

In the second quarter, Warren would return to the basket with an untouched layup to continue the team margin to 37-9.

With four minutes on the clock, MUW would bank a three-pointer as Millsaps would continue to see a 40-12 advantage. The three-pointer halted yet another 16-0 run.

Millsaps would continue to attack the Owls on both sides of the court for the remainder of the quarter as Novak netted a jumper for a 50-12 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter the Owls would continue to struggle as Warren, Franklin, Anderson, Novak and Freeman would hold the court down to push the team further ahead at 69-27 after three quarters.

A Berry three-pointer would help Millsaps reach 90 points before MUW would net a shot at the free-throw line, falling to the Majors, 92-43 on Friday.

The Majors will be back in action to face Belhaven inside the Heidelberg Gymnasium on Tuesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
