JACKSON, Miss. – The men's basketball team fought tough, but couldn't stop a Belhaven second-half surge, falling 78-60 inside Rugg Arena on Tuesday.
Millsaps (1-3) outscored the Blazers, 38-26 in the paint and 23-15 in points off turnovers.
Belhaven (3-1) outshot the Majors 50 percent (18-of-36) to 41.67 percent (15-of-36) in the second half and held a 51-37 scoring advantage in the second half.
Junior
Caleb Kent tallied 14 points, two rebounds and one assist. Classmate
Dakota Gasca netted seven points, six rebounds, four assists and added a steal.
Senior
Drew Roth brought home 12 points and six rebounds as well.
Gasca opened the game with an up-and-under, driving make to the hoop. Kent converted a similar fancy drive, giving Millsaps an early 6-4 margin.
Kent then rushed to the rim and scored through contact, making it an 8-6 contest with 11:58 left in a low-scoring, opening flow of action.
After the Blazers took the lead, Gorton utilized a spinning finger roll to give Millsaps a 15-14 margin with 7:36 to go in the half.
Down by four, Gasca later found Roth wide open in the paint and Roth slammed it home for an emphatic dunk, making it a 21-19 Blazer advantage.
Sophomore
Devin Harris cut to the basket for the final make of the half for the Majors. Belhaven hold a narrow 27-23 score at intermission.
Gasca got the scoring started with a spinning reverse layup in the second half's opening minute.
Belhaven answered with a 13-4 run after an and-one, making it 40-29 five minutes into the second. The Blazers added four more points to create a 15-point hole.
With the deficit up to 23, freshman
Samuel Holt connected for a trey to give the Major fans some energy.
Kent later connected with Harris after back-and-forth passing, netting a shot down 64-45.
Holt added another trey and scored a layup while being fouled for the final points of the contest. However, Belhaven prevailed, 78-60 on Tuesday night.
The Majors return to the court and host the University of the Ozarks in the Millsaps College Tournament on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
