JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team took care of business on the court by bettering a quality Emory University squad, 82-54 inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.
Senior Haley Franklin led the way for the Majors with her second double-double of the season with an impressive 34 points and 12 rebounds, while adding one blocked shot and two steals on defense. Franklin sank 14 of 17 free throws in the Belhaven Hoops Classic contest played at Millsaps.
Junior Elyse Warren dominated the paint by finishing with her fifth double-double of the season. The Memphis, Tenn., native recorded 12 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 5-for-8 from field-goal range.
Sophomore Tia Anderson had a solid performance on the court with 10 points, three rebounds and one steal. Classmate
Garin Freeman accumulated nine points, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals against the Eagles.
Lexus Keyes, a junior transfer from East Central Community College, totaled eight points and one board off the bench.
The Millsaps (5-1) bench outscored Emory (3-2) with a huge 35-10 advantage. The Majors also controlled paint (42-20 points) and point off turnovers, outnumbering their opponents, 22-12.
Emory was forced into 19 turnovers, while Millsaps only gave up the ball 11 times.
A dominant second quarter saw the Majors outshoot the Eagles 64.3 percent (9-of-14) to 15.4 percent (2-of-13).
Franklin put the Majors on board first with a pair of free throws, where the team would stay the rest of the contest.
Millsaps would continue to score from the free-throw line as senior Whitney Novak (three rebounds) moved the Majors ahead, 8-2.
Freeman ended the first quarter with a driving layup inside the paint to give Millsaps a 14-9 advantage.
Emory would make it a 20-15 deficit before Millsaps rattled off the next 13 points. Freeman would continue the squad's advantage with a layup and a free throw moments later to make it 32-15. Junior
Maddy Maw would come off the bench and bank a long-range three pointer at the buzzer to lift Millsaps to a 36-17 advantage at intermission.
In the third quarter, the Millsaps bench would continue to dominate on the floor. With 4:28 left in the frame, Keyes sunk a three-pointer to extend the Major margin up to 50-25.
Anderson opened the fourth quarter with a hook shot outside the paint to continue Millsaps' momentum by 23 points at 56-33.
Warren closed out the contest with a layup as the team bettered Emory University, 82-54 on Sunday.
The Majors will be back in action on Saturday and challenge Huntingdon College in the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic opener. Game start is set for 3 p.m.
