Coach LeBlanc Becomes Winningest Coach in Women’s Basketball Program History

LeBlanc Records 130th Millsaps Win in 84-68 Triumph Over Huntingdon on Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team secured their fifth consecutive win of the season by taking down Huntingdon College, 84-68 in the Millsaps Thanksgiving Classic inside the Hangar Dome on Saturday. Head coach Justin LeBlanc became the winningest coach in program history after securing his 130th win for the Majors.

LeBlanc improves his record to 130-79 (.622 winning percentage) and 139-96 overall. He coached one season at Centenary (La.) in 2015-16.

The previous Millsaps best was 129 wins held by coach Cindy Hannon (129-43), who coached the Majors for seven incredible seasons (1990-97).

Junior Elyse Warren led the way for the Majors with another double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, while shooting 6-of-8 from field goal range.

Senior Haley Franklin, dominating again on the court, led the team in scoring with 33 points. She also added six rebounds, four assists and two steals on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor.

Sophomore Garin Freeman erupted against the Hawks with 13 points, six assists, four steals and three boards. Senior Whitney Novak posted seven points, two assists and a rebound in the triumph over Huntingdon.

Senior Emily Adams recorded six points, four assists, three rebounds, with one block and steal on defense.

Huntingdon (1-3) outscored the Majors (34-23) in bench points, while Millsaps (6-1) shot 76.9 percent from the free-throw line (20-of-26).

A Franklin jump shot gave the Majors their first points in the beginning of the first quarter before Huntingdon would move ahead, 5-2 following a long range three-pointer.

Both teams would trade off points the remainder of the quarter before junior Maddy Maw responded with a trey at the buzzer to close out first, giving the Majors a 20-18 lead.

In the second quarter, Adams spotted up a three-pointer to pull the Majors back ahead of the Hawks by one point.

With five minutes and 31 seconds remaining in the second quarter, a Franklin layup inside the paint would extend the Majors scoring to 30-22.

Freeman made free throws with three minutes and 17 seconds on the clock to push the Majors ahead by 11 points, following a 13-0 run.

The Hawks would cut their deficit down to seven points to close the second quarter still in favor of the Majors, 37-30.

In the third quarter, Millsaps held the Hawks to 16.7 percent (1-of-6) from long range. Novak sank the Majors' first tally of the second half with a three-point bucket.

However, the Millsaps offense would continue to dominate inside and outside the paint as Franklin drove to the basket making it a 50-36 advantage.

The Hawks would soon shake back to cut their deficit down to five points following a long-range make courtesy of a 13-4 rally.

With 23 seconds remaining, sophomore Tia Anderson (six points, four rebounds) recorded a crucial three-pointer to close the quarter with Millsaps out as the front runner at 57-49.

In the fourth quarter, Huntingdon would make it a five-point disadvantage on multiple occasions.

However, Millsaps stretched out the margin to 76-58 following a Franklin made free-throw for the game's largest disparity.

Franklin would close the scoring the rest for the Majors with a gritty layup to take help dispatch the Hawks, 84-68 on Saturday.

The Majors will be back in action on Sunday and battle MUW, beginning at 3 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
