Men’s Basketball Falls in Overtime Thriller to MUW, 62-60

Caleb Kent Records Double-Double, Cameron Lumar Nets 22 Points on Sunday

COLUMBUS, Miss. The Millsaps men's basketball team gave its all, but fell short in an overtime heartbreaker to MUW, 62-60 inside Pohl Gymnasium on Sunday.

Junior Caleb Kent led the Majors with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Madison, Miss., native also highlighted four assists and one steal.

Sophomore Cameron Lumar posted a season-high of 22 points and seven rebounds. He also tied a career high of five steals.

Senior Drew Roth recorded nine points, seven rebounds, three steals and a block.

Classmate Nicholas Ughovwa accumulated six points and two steals, with a pair of blocks. The Sulphur, La., product also set a career high of 11 rebounds against the Owls.

Millsaps (2-7) outscored MUW (3-6) by a 12-6 margin in fastbreak points, while leading 18-11 in second-chance points.

The Owls held the Majors 27-9 in total bench points as the Majors took control of a 26-16 advantage in points off turnovers.

Millsops struggled beyond the arch (2-for-25) and free-throw line (10-for-27). Sunday's game was the first overtime game for the Majors since Jan. 7, 2022.

In the opening of the first half, a Kent hook shot and jumper gave Millsaps their first lead of the game at 4-0 with back-to-back makes.

A Roth three-pointer would push the Majors' margin further ahead to 7-3 moments later.

The teams would trade baskets and the lead 13 times on the day. Each squad would be tied on 11 occasions as well.

Playing physically inside the lane, an Ughovwa layup and Lumar pair of layups would pull the Majors back in front, 16-13.

Midway through the first half, Millsaps would continue attacking the paint as sophomore Devin Harris would score his first points off the bench with a Lumar assist.

With two minutes and 53 seconds remaining and leading 21-18 before halftime, junior Mack Gorton (five rebounds) would come down with a crucial block inside the paint.

In the final seconds of the first half, Harris would collect a steal from an Owls offensive player and junior Dakota Gasca finished strong at the basket with a one-handed layup at the rim.

MUW would bank two free-throw shots before the buzzer to make it a 25-24 Millsaps advantage at halftime.

In the second half, Lumar recorded the first make for the Majors and Roth's block would send back an Owl layup attempt one minute in.

Remaining on a hot streak, Lumar would knock down a trey to keep the Majors ahead, 30-26.

Playing with intensity on both sides of the court, the two squads would trade further points against each other.

With one minute and 46 seconds remaining, a Lumar trey would come in the clutch to match Millsaps' largest lead of the second half at 52-46.

Not giving up, MUW would return the favor by collecting three made free throws to cut into the Major margin with 50 seconds left.

MUW would collect the ball with 18 seconds left. The hosts would then knock down a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to knot the game at 52-52 and send the game into overtime.

Following a great defensive performance from both squads in the second half, the two teams continued their stout play by trading off points.

Trailing 60-56 with 2:37 left in overtime, Kent, Lumar, Ughovwa and Roth all netted individual free throws to tie the game.

MUW then sank free throws with 46 and 10 seconds left on the clock to push back ahead, 62-60.

Kent made one final run at a layup, but the attempt wouldn't fall to close the game at the final horn.

The Majors will continue non-conference action against the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark., on Thursday slated to begin at 1 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
