– The Millsaps men's basketball team came up short against Hendrix, 75-67 in their regular-season finale, while honoring seniors
Aaron Ursin and
TJ Hogan for Senior Day inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.
Millsaps (7-17, 6-8 SAA) stood over Hendrix (6-18, 3-10 SAA) with a 20-14 advantage in points from the paint, but the Warriors would outscore the Majors 10-2 in fast breaks, 16-9 from the bench and finishing with a 9-4 advantage in points from turnovers.
Freshman
Cameron Lumar led the Majors with 20 points while adding one assist and two steals. Lumar also netted 6-of-11 field goals while shooting 4-of-6 at the free-throw line.
Ursin tied a season-high 17 points adding two blocks and an assist. Hogan set a career-high 11 points and eight rebounds, while finishing with one assist. Junior
Nicholas Ughovwa held seven points and six total rebounds as well.
In the first half, Ursin would come out on fire with a jumper and a 3-pointer to give the Majors a 7-0 lead.
The Majors would keep responding as junior
Drew Roth would push the Majors ahead, 11-2 following two made free throws five minutes in. Hendrix would use a long-range shot to shorten the Majors lead to 11-9 moments later.
An Ursin jumper and sophomore
Evan Watson trey would keep the Majors ahead by five points, but the Warriors would comeback with a jumper and back-to-back treys to go ahead, 20-17.
A trey by Lumar would put Millsaps up 32-29, but the Warriors would make two jump shots to take gain their lead back by to go into halftime leading, 33-32.
The Warriors would go up by four points following a 3-pointer to open the second half. Ursin later sank a layup and Ughovwa would make a free throw to give Millsaps a narrow 39-38 advantage.
Both teams would then begin exchanging points as the game featured nine ties and 15 led changes. The margin would stay three points or less until 6:11 remaining following a Warrior fast-break jumper.
Millsaps would then fall behind by nine with five minutes remaining after an 11-2 Hendrix run. The Majors would make it a five-point game again thanks to a pair of Lumar jumper with 3:36 left.
He would later hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 70-65 with 25 seconds to play. However, the Warriors converted seven free throws after and to hold on for a 75-67 win.
Millsaps will now enter the SAA Men's Basketball Tournament as either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed. They will either travel to face Oglethorpe or Sewanee in the SAA First Round on Sunday. Time and opponent will be determined following the final SAA games on Wednesday night.
