DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps women's basketball team gave everything they had entering with a three-game winning streak, but fell short to Centre, 72-54 inside the Alumni Gymnasium on Sunday.
Freshman
Garin Freeman posted 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal in her first collegiate start.
Junior
Emily Adams tallied 10 points, sophomore
Elyse Warren netted six points and nine rebounds and classmate
Maddie Maw recorded a career-high six points to along with two blocks and a board.
Freshman
Tia Anderson finished with seven points, five rebounds, an assist and two steals.
Millsaps (19-4, 10-2 SAA) outscored their opponents 23-19 in bench points, while the holding the Colonels to 22.7 percentage in long-range shooting (5-of-22). The Majors were playing with top scorer junior
Haley Franklin.
Centre (18-4, 9-2 SAA) carried a 14-8 advantage in points from turnovers, a 28-16 lead in points from the paint, while leading 16-8 in second-chance points.
Centre took an early 7-0 lead in the beginning of the first quarter, but a Novak driving layup would cut down the margin 9-7 with 3:50 remaining in the first. The Colonels would score two free throws to end the first quarter out front, 14-10.
Centre would begin the second on an 8-0 run and later took a 14-point advantage midway through the quarter.
Senior
Helena Roe converted a jumper and dished a pass to Maw for a 3-pointer to cut the margin down to 28-18. The Colonels would extend their scoring with two free throws before heading into the half leading, 37-24.
Millsaps responded with an 8-0 rally of their own in the opening moments of the second half, which was punctuated with an Anderson turnaround shot from the free-throw line and pair of Warren free throws. The Colonels ended the third quarter ahead, 51-40.
In the final quarter, Centre shot a 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the foul line and 78.9 percent (15-of-19) for the game.
Maw banked a trey off the backboard, cutting the deficit to 57-47 with 4:50 to play. Freeman netted a 3-pointer of her own to make it a 63-52 contest with 2:35 on the clock.
Centre continued to answer on the court and closed out the game on a 6-0 run to top the Majors, 72-54.
