ATLANTA – The excellent junior campaign of Millsaps golfer
Annie Piggott continued to be recognized as league coaches named her the SAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.
Piggott made history by becoming the first Millsaps men's or women's golfer to secure three SAA weekly recognitions in one season, following the announcement in a conference press release on Monday.
The Lindsay, Ontario product was named to the Space City Classic All-Tournament Team, tying for third place at 10-over par on Feb. 27. Monday's plaudit covered the previous two weeks of competition as all SAA golf programs resumed their schedules with spring events.
Piggott shot a 70 to go one-under par in Round One. She closed with an 82 to finish 10-over par overall and tie for third place out of 56 competitors. The junior had the fourth most pars (20) and fifth most birdies (four) after 36 holes on the par-71 course.
The third-place showing is the best of her career, having previously placed fourth on two occasions. In four competitions this season, Piggott has finished tied for seventh, fourth, tied for 15th and now tied for third.
Dating back to 2012 when the SAA was formed and began sponsoring golf, the only previous two-time SAA weekly award recipient for Millsaps was
Ryan Martin of the men's program.
The Millsaps women's golf team will continue its spring slate at the Hal Sutton Invitational in Bossier City, La. on March 18 and 19.
