JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team was bested by Birmingham-Southern at Striplin Field, Friday and Saturday by 7-4, 12-2 and 12-3 decisions.
Game 1: 7-4, L
Junior Evan Scott recorded a 3-for-4 day, including a pair of doubles in Game One on Friday. Graduate Robert Vassallo finished 2-for-4 with a run scored as well.
Senior Jackson Hood pitched six innings in relief with a season-high seven strikeouts, while allowing only three hits, three runs and two walks to the Panthers.
BSC jumped out front in the first inning, 2-0 and would later add two additional runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 4-0 margin.
The Panthers continued to jump ahead with an RBI double and two-run homer to create a 7-0 cushion through four innings.
The top of the sixth saw the Majors get on the scoreboard when junior Gray Berry used a sacrifice fly to score graduate Branyan Bounds.
A wild pitch brought junior Bradley Pelle home from third base to cut the margin to 7-2.
The Majors continued to fight back when Bounds reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Vassallo to reach home from third in the seventh.
Millsaps then made it a 7-4 contest in the eighth inning as Page reached first on an error and also providing Berry a chance to score from third.
In the top of the ninth, sophomore EJ Ousley singled up the middle and eventually stole third. However, BSC closed the inning and claimed Game One, 7-4.
Game 2: 12-2, L (7 inn.)
The teams played a doubleheader on Saturday, with Game Two ending via the 10-run rule and Game Three concluding in a prescheduled 7-inning contest.
Bounds finished 2-for-4, while Berry and senior David Abbadessa both registered a hit and an RBI.
BSC started with two runs in the first inning, but Abbadessa singled to center field to bring senior Case Page, making it 2-1 through two innings.
Pelle followed with a leadoff triple in the third and Berry tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
BSC would build back their lead with three runs in both the third and fourth innings. The Panthers struck again with two runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh for a 12-2, run-rule victory.
Game 3: 12-3, L (7 inn.)
The series concluded with Game Three also on Saturday. Pelle recorded a two-run home run and senior Jackson Ware finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
BSC used a solo homer to take a 1-0 advantage in the third inning. Scott then walked and Page singled to put pressure on the Panthers in the fourth. Ware proceeded to tie the game with a two-out single up the middle, bringing Scott home.
The hosts responded in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff homer and with a double and two singles with two outs. BSC grew their margin back to 4-1.
Continuing to show resolve, the Majors retaliated with a Pelle two-run home run over the right-field fence. The junior from Kenner, La., scored Bounds to make it a 4-3 deficit.
BSC continued to answer with four runs in the fifth and sixth. The Panthers would hold for a final 12-3 decision.
Millsaps will next conclude the regular season with a matchup against LeTourneau University at Twenty Field on Tuesday, beginning at 3 p.m. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
