JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps volleyball team and fans were excited to kick off the preseason with a 25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 15-7 exhibition win over Jones College inside the Hangar Dome on Tuesday.
Seniors
Anna Capezzera (11 kills, 14 digs) and
Zoe Elder (38 assists, 12 digs) concluded the outing with double-doubles. Junior
Ally Baer tallied 10 kills and a trio of Majors also added double-digit digs, including junior
Olivia Danos (12 digs), sophomore
Sandy Bourgeois (11 digs) and freshman
Abigail Drury (10 digs).
In the first set, Jones College escaped early with a 7-2 lead, however a service ace by the Majors would tie the contest at 12-12.
A fourth straight attack error by Jones would give the Majors their first lead of the set and grow the advantage to 21-18.
Millsaps would continue to hold off their opponents late by forcing two attack errors and recording two kills to end the first set, 25-23.
The Majors took over in the beginning of second set with four straight points to move ahead, 9-4. However, a kill by the Bobcats would draw both squads even at 12-12.
Both teams would battle back and forth in the final moments, however three attack errors, a pair of kills by senior
Rylee Stephens, and a kill by junior
Ally Baer would put the second set away for the Majors, 25-23.
In the third set, Millsaps saw a 12-6 lead, but the Bobcats used a 13-3 surge to tie and take the lead at 19-15. The Majors would fall further behind as Jones College would clinch the third set of the evening, 25-20.
In final pre-determined set to 15 points, both teams started strong at 4-4. A pair of kills by Capezzera and a kill by junior
Mallory Richardson would push the Majors ahead, 7-4.
A 4-0 run would push the Majors out front 11-5 midway through before an additional kill by Richardson and bad set from the Bobcats and an attack error would lead the Majors to a 15-7 win in the fourth and final set.
Millsaps will be back in action traveling to Shreveport, La. for the Cajun Country Classic hosted by Centenary College. The Majors will see Howard Payne University at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30.
