MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Millsaps women's soccer team stood strong after competing in back-to-back matches over the weekend, but fell short to Huntingdon College, 3-1 at the Samford Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The Majors had five fouls to Huntingdon's eight and Millsaps held a 5-3 corner kick advantage. Both teams would make six saves each with junior Emily Lozano goalkeeping for the Majors.
Freshman Suzanna Busbee tallied her first collegiate goal while posting four shot attempts. Sophomore Alex Bremond had three shot attempts with an assist, while registering one shot on goal.
Junior Haley James fired a shot on goal and also assisted on Busbee's tally. Classmate Keely Marshall collected two shots on goal against.
The Majors topped the Hawks early in the first half when Busbee scored in the 13th minute. She shot the ball across the goal with her left foot and found the opposite corner.
Busbee's first collegiate goal was assisted by teammates Bremond and James to move Millsaps ahead, 1-0. The freshman from Homewood, Ala., was rewarded after hitting the post moments earlier.
Huntingdon, however, would immediately respond back with a goal scored in the 19th minute to draw the match even at 1-1.
The Hawks would try to score again hoping to take the lead, but would be stopped by Lozano 30 seconds later.
Both squads would fight hard and trade shots in the final minutes of the half. Huntingdon would nearly cash in, but a missed shot off the crossbar kept the match at 1-1 going into halftime.
The Hawks eventually broke through in the 53rd minute of the second half capturing their second goal of the day to take their first lead of the match. Huntingdon successfully fought off a pair of Major chances moments before from senior Ana Cuesta and Bremond.
Lozano kept the Majors in the fight late with another pair of saves in the 65th and 67th minutes.
Millsaps continued to push for the equalizer and playing competitively would see Bremond and Marshall take strong corner kicks in the 74th minute. Marshall was stopped with a shot two minutes later.
In the 81st minute, Huntingdon would reply with their final goal of the match to take a 3-1 advantage.
Sophomore Michelle Marquet was stopped in the closing moments and the hosts secured a win over the Majors.
