ATLANTA – The Millsaps volleyball team (13-2, 1-1 SAA) secured their first Southern Athletic Association victory of the season, downing Oglethorpe (7-7, 0-2 SAA) on Sunday. The squad bettered the Stormy Petrels, 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22 inside the Dorough Field House.
Millsaps senior setter Zoe Elder tallied her 2,000th career assist in the match after finishing Sunday with 43 assists, seven digs, five blocks and three aces.
Classmate Anna Capezzera led the way on the attack with a double-double of 17 kills and 16 digs.
Junior Trista Naquin recorded 11 kills, four block assists and one dig as colleague Mallory Richardson had eight kills, five digs and three block assists.
Junior Ally Baer finished with nine kills, seven blocks, six digs and three aces, while sophomore Sandy Bourgeois ended the matchup with 22 digs and three assists.
Oglethorpe (7-7, 0-2 SAA) started the match on a 5-2 run. Millsaps would eventually disrupt the Stormy Petrels lead on a 4-1 run, with a Richardson kill followed by two attack errors and a bad set. The Majors created a 10-9 margin early.
The Stormy Petrels already down 13-10, would then watch the Majors build an 18-14 advantage before making a substitution change.
Back-to-back Baer kills and an attack error pushed the Millsaps advantage to 22-16. Capezzera aided the effort with a kill late and better Oglethorpe, 25-18 in the first set.
In the second set, Oglethorpe jumped out to a 3-0 start, but Millsaps would quickly draw the set even at 3-3.
Both teams would begin trading points, but the Majors would begin to intervene on a 6-0 run as a pair of Naquin and Capezzera kills sparked the squad, pushing ahead to 9-5.
The Stormy Petrels soon forced a 9-9 draw as well as ties at 12-12 and 15-15. A crucial 4-0 late in set two gave Millsaps some breathing room.
Oglethorpe would call a time out moments later and respond with a 3-1 run. Naquin would stay focused a provide another kill, which was followed by an Oglethorpe attack error.
Capezzera doing what she does best would close the second set out strong with a kill, giving the Majors a 25-20 triumph.
In the third set, Millsaps would surge ahead to a 7-3 lead before the Stormy Petrels fought back for an 8-8 tie.
Millsaps would stretch their lead again as two kills by Naquin, a Baer and Capezzera kill established a 15-12 margin.
Oglethorpe, however, would come back again for a 15-15 draw. Millsaps would call a timeout as Naquin and Capezzera added another kill each to push past Oglethorpe, 18-15.
The seesaw continued as knotted the third set once more at 18-18 with two attack errors and a kill.
Millsaps then utilized a service error, two kills and an Oglethorpe attack error to push forward, 22-19.
However, the final points would come down to the wire as the hosts used a 4-0 rally to take a 23-22 lead late.
An Oglethorpe service error knotted the set up at 23-23, but a kill and Millsaps attack error kept the Stormy Petrels alive with a narrow, 25-23 win in set three.
Looking to close out their opponents again in the fourth set, Oglethorpe built a 4-1 cushion early. The teams would trade points for the majority of the set before Oglethorpe built an 18-12 lead.
Millsaps not letting the set slip away from them, would overpower the Stormy Petrels on a resilient 9-0 run to take the lead at 21-18.
Moments later, Oglethorpe would call a timeout and make substitutions and tie the set up at 21-21.
After a Millsaps timeout, the Majors closed out the match with a 4-1 run, highlighted by three Baer kills. Millsaps clinched their first conference victory of the season with a 25-22 triumph in set four.
