JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team bested Oglethorpe in every virtually every statistical category but was outshot in an 84-73 defeat inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.
Junior Caleb Kent recorded a double-double against the Stormy Petrels. The Madison, Miss., native posted a season-high 12 rebounds and added 15 points on the floor. The guard also added two assists and one steal to his accolades.
Classmate Dakota Gasca finished with a season-high 20 points. The West Monroe, La., native shot an impressive 11-of-12 from the free-throw line while also setting a season-high of three steals.
Gasca dished out four assists on offense and recorded five rebounds within the interior.
Graduate TJ Hogan set the tone on the court with 12 points, two rebounds and one assist.
Senior Nicholas Ughovwa accumulated 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and blocked
two shots against the Stormy Petrels.
Millsaps (3-14, 1-3 SAA) dominated Oglethorpe (9-7, 1-3 SAA) in every statistical category. The Majors led 38-28 in points inside the paint and also finished out strongly against Stormy Petrels with a 26-17 advantage in bench totals.
The key difference came from the visitors connecting on 45.2 percent of shots (28-of-62) and building a 21-point margin in the first half.
Sophomore Noah Babineaux (six rebounds) banked the Majors first-three pointer. The Stormy Petrels would soon take a 12-4 lead moments later.
Millsaps would hold their opponents to single digits until the Stormy Petrels utilized a three-pointer of their own to extend their advantage by 15 points with 11:04 to go.
Oglethorpe would continue dominating on the court to surpass the Majors, 47-26. Millsaps began to pick up the pace late in the half after trailing by a huge margin, cutting the disadvantage to 13 points at intermission.
With 4:15 remaining until the end of the contest, a Hogan driving layup would disrupt the Stormy Petrels' scoring margin down to nine points.
Kent's layup would see the last points for the Majors as Oglethorpe would escape ahead, 84-73 in the final moments of the second half.
