JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team finished the weekend strong after remaining undefeated in the Southern Athletic Association. The Majors defeated Oglethorpe University, 69-51 on Sunday afternoon inside the Hangar Dome.
Junior Elyse Warren led the Majors in scoring with a season-high 20 points while grabbing 10 rebounds and an assist.
Achieving a double-double, the Memphis, Tenn., native also shot 7-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-7 at the free-throw line.
Sophomore Garin Freeman contributed 15 points and five rebounds. Effectively shutting down the Stormy Petrels, the Little Rock, Ark., product also added five assists and three steals, while shooting 4-of-7 from the floor and 7-of-8 at the foul lane.
Senior Haley Franklin scored nine points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists and recorded one steal against Oglethorpe.
Sophomore Tia Anderson posted eight points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Junior Lexus Keyes accumulated seven points and one rebound. She also banked home 3-of-4 from field.
Millsaps (15-2, 4-0 SAA) exceeded past Oglethorpe (10-8, 1-3 SAA) in total bench points (35-8). They led their opponents, 30-22 with points inside the paint while taking a 12-3 advantage from fast break points. Millsaps was also efficient connecting on 81 percent of free-throw attempts (17-of-21).
In the opening of the first quarter, Franklin made a pair of free throws to give the Majors a 2-0 lead over the Stormy Petrels.
Freeman would grab a steal on defense prior to senior Whitney Novak (six points, four rebounds) sinking a three-pointer on the next possession.
Both competitive teams would exchange points before Freeman's free throws extended the Majors' early surge to 12-7.
With 2:15 to go in the first quarter, Keyes drove the ball down the lane for a euro step.
Oglethorpe drained their last shot from long range before a pair of Warren free throws closed the first quarter with the Majors still ahead, 16-12.
In the second quarter, Millsaps continued their tempo as Anderson shot a three-pointer and connected from behind the arc.
Cutting its deficit down to three points with 2:23 until intermission, Oglethorpe stayed in close contact before Keyes utilized a fastbreak jumper in response.
Another Anderson three-pointer gave Millsaps a 31-23 margin closing out half for the Majors at the buzzer.
After shooting 80 percent (8-of-10) from the foul line in the first half as team, Keyes put the Majors up by nine points following a three-pointer from the elbow midway into the third stanza.
Oglethorpe responded with a long three of their own seconds later.
However, with 3:40 left in the third, a Franklin layup expanded the Majors' stretch back up to 11 points.
Senior Emily Adams (four points, three steals, two assists, one rebound) then sank a wide-open three in the corner to increase the lead to 45-31.
Freeman's nifty layup at the buzzer gave the team their largest lead of 16 to close out the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, an Oglethorpe step-back jumper cut the contest back to nine. Needing a counterpunch, a Novak three-pointer would put the Majors back up by 16 points with 4:37 until the end of the contest.
Franklin's step-back jumper in the closing seconds helped the Majors secure the victory as the Stormy Petrels fell behind, 69-51 on Sunday.
