JACKSON, Miss. — Belhaven University edged Millsaps College 1-0 on Wednesday at Harper Davis Field in a fiercely contested Riverside Derby. Belhaven's lone goal came in the second half, proving to be the game-winner.
Millsaps senior goalkeeper
Michael Hamauei registered five saves, but the offense was unable to convert their nine shot attempts. Sophomores
Ellis Dykes (four attempts) and
Harrison Williams (two attempts) both posted a shot on goal.
The match between the Majors and Belhaven (7-2-2) started with both teams attempting to break through defensively, but the first half ended scoreless.
Belhaven applied early pressure with a corner kick at 2:09 and several shots, though none found the target.
Millsaps (6-3-2) responded with shots from Dykes and Williams, both saved by Belhaven's goalkeeper, Danny Bahena.
Millsaps' defense, anchored by goalkeeper Hamauei, managed to keep Belhaven at bay, saving a crucial shot from Carlos Loza at the 33:18 mark. The half concluded with Belhaven dominating in attempts but failing to convert, while the Majors struggled to capitalize on their limited opportunities.
In the second half, the Majors and Belhaven remained scoreless until the 83rd minute when Courtland Williams scored for Belhaven for just outside the box on a free kick, giving them a 1-0 lead. Hamauei made crucial saves, notably stopping shots from Williams in the 63rd minute and Aidan Holcombe in the 89th minute.
Millsaps had several attempts, including shot attempts by freshmen
Christian Lopez and
Abram Lawless, but were unable to find the back of the net. The best chance came with 10 minutes remaining when Dykes reached the Belhaven goalkeeper box and narrowly missed a shot toward the right post, bouncing just wide.
The match concluded with Belhaven securing a narrow 1-0 victory over the Majors.
