JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps women's basketball team defeated Austin College, 56-44, in a non-conference matchup inside the Hangar Dome on Saturday.
Millsaps scored 24 points in the paint and converted 18 of 30 free throws, while Austin was held scoreless from the free-throw line and committed 17 turnovers. The Majors also used a late fourth quarter surge and held Austin (2-2) to 29.2 percent from the floor (19-of-65).
Senior
Elyse Warren led the team with 20 points and recorded a game-high 19 rebounds.
The Memphis, Tenn., native's double-double featured her shooting 6-of-10 from the floor and 8-of-12 from the free-throw line against the Kangaroos.
Junior
Garin Freeman contributed 10 points, four assists, four rebounds, two steals and one block. Freeman also shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe while contesting two steals.
Classmate
Tia Anderson scored 12 points, including two 3-pointers, and secured six rebounds.
Junior
Mya Richardson tallied eight points and three assists, making a pair of her 3-point attempts.
Millsaps opened the contest against the Kangaroos with a strong performance, establishing early momentum with Freeman's layup at 9:45 to get the ball rolling.
Anderson added to the lead with two 3-pointers, with Richardson hitting a 3-pointer at the 5:00 minute mark on the score clock.
Warren scored back-to-back layups and two free throws to continue the Majors hot streak. Junior
Bailey Johnson finished the quarter on defense, locking her opponent with a steal, helping the Majors stay on top of their game with an 18-10 lead to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter Millsaps gained momentum midway with Warren leading the charge by scoring consistent layups inside the paint. The Majors built their largest advantage of the game at 21-8 in the opening moments of the second quarter.
in addition, her layup at 6:46 and subsequent baskets were pivotal in maintaining a lead. Austin's efforts, including a three-pointer, attempted a comeback. However, Millsaps held firm to conclude the first half ahead, 32-24.
Millsaps opened the third quarter with a quick defensive play, as Freeman stole the ball and converted it into a fastbreak layup at 9:18, extending their lead.
The Little Rock, Ark., native followed through with her shots by adding two free throws at 7:52.
After Austin College fought back after a 13-0 run and leading 39-38, Maw contributed a layup at 1:35 to regain the advantage. Millsaps held a narrow edge by the end of the quarter, leading 41-39.
Millsaps secured momentum yet again early in the fourth quarter with Warren's layup and an and-one free throw, extending their lead to 44–39.
The Majors controlled tempo through key defensive rebounds and free throws, widening the gap to 49–44.
Richardson's 3-pointer with 4:05 remaining further solidified their advantage, extending the lead to 55–44. Millsaps maintained defensive pressure, holding Austin to just five points and 10 percent from the floor (2-of-20) in the quarter.
Millsaps' defense clamped down on the Kangaroos to conclude the contest with a 58–44 victory.
