Women's Basketball Stopped by Huntingdon, 57-54 in Late on Sunday

Garin Freeman Recorded 16 Points, Eight Asssits, Two Blocks in Tough Fight against Hawks

JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps women's basketball team fell to Huntingdon College, 57-54 in a close contest that saw eight lead changes inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.

Millsaps led by five at the end of the first quarter, fueled by 22 points in the paint, but was unable to hold off Huntingdon's second-quarter rally. the Majors held the Hawks 6-3 in fast break opportunities.

Junior Garin Freeman topped the Majors with 16 points, making 10 of 14 free throws, along with contributing eight assists, one steal, and two blocks on defense. 

Senior Elyse Warren dominated the boards, collecting 14 rebounds, including 11 on the defensive end. Junior Tia Anderson posted 14 points, making five field goals and securing nine rebounds. Senior Lexus Keyes scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds against the Hawks.

Millsaps opened the game with a strong presence in the paint where they scored eight points from close range. Anderson contributed significantly, hitting a three-pointer at 5:40 with dime pass by Freeman adding to the team's momentum. 

In the second quarter, Freeman made a layup at 8:08 inside the paint, increasing the Majors' lead to 18-15.

However, Huntingdon's scoring efforts inside the paint, led to a 21-10 period advantage. As the quarter concluded, Millsaps trailed 32-26 at halftime after putting up a hard fought battle on the court.

The Majors surged ahead early in the third quarter with a layup by Anderson at 9:23, assisted by junior Bailey Johnson, taking a 32-28 lead. Keyes then knocked down a crucial 3-pointer at 8:02 to bring Millsaps within two points, 34-32.

As the quarter progressed, Freeman tied the game at 34 with a layup at 7:23. Later, with 2:14 remaining on the score clock, Anderson scored again with a layup inside the post, putting Millsaps up 42-39. However, Huntingdon scored late layups to stay on top of the Majors, 43-42 to end the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Millsaps briefly seized momentum when junior Mya Richardson connected on a downtown 3-pointer at 9:18, giving the home team a 45-43 edge.

Freeman followed with a fast-break layup and a pair of free throw that helped the Majors extend their lead to 52-44. 

Huntingdon then answered with an important three-point shot at 2:24, closing the score to 52-51. 

In the final seconds of the quarter, Huntingdon took the lead with another 3-pointer with 0:07 seconds on the clock, securing a narrow victory. Millsaps fell short in the closing moments, concluding the game with a 57-54 hard fought loss on Sunday.

The Majors will continue their non-conference action against Belhaven in an away matchup on Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m. inside the Rugg Arena with live video and live stats provided at gomajors.com.
