Baseball Sweeps Edgewood in Thrilling Three-Game Series

Majors Use Late-Inning Heroics to Soar Past Eagles

JACKSON & GOODMAN, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team used sound pitching and clutch hitting to sweep Edgewood College in a three-game series, Friday through Sunday. The first two games were played at Twenty Field on the Millsaps campus, while game three was moved to Holmes Community College's Charlie Donald Field.

Game 1, W: Millsaps 10, Edgewood 4

Senior Gray Berry batted 2-for-5 with a homer, three RBIs, a double and two runs. Classmate Evan Scott recorded a hit, three RBIs, three walks and a stolen base on Friday.

Graduate Jackson Ware (2-for-2) totaled two walks and two RBIs, while senior Bradley Pelle doubled, scored three runs, tallied an RBI, walked twice and stole a base against the Eagles.

Fourth-year student Nick Tarantino was electric with 6.0 IP and nine strikeouts. He didn't yield a walk and held Edgewood to one run and three hits.

The Majors jumped ahead, 2-0 in the first inning following an early Eagle error. Pelle and Berry scored from second and third.
 
Berry tacked on another run in the third when he clobbered the first pitch of his next at-bat over the left-field wall.

Millsaps pulled further away with a four-run fourth inning, making it 7-0. Pelle began by walking with the bases loaded, scoring Ware.

Scott then stepped up by batting home graduate David Abbadessa and sixth year Branyan Bounds with a single. Ousley immediately followed with an RBI single to plate Pelle.

Edgewood broke the shutout in the sixth with a sacrifice fly. However, Millsaps added three additional runs in the eighth when Berry doubled home Abbadessa and Ware. Scott concluded the Millsaps scoring with a sacrifice fly, bringing Pelle home.

The Eagles added three runs in the ninth, but fell short, 10-4 in Game One.

 
Game 2, W: Millsaps 11, Edgewood 8

The second game was a back-and-forth battle with late homer heroics by Berry. He tallied a three-run homer, was hit by two pitches and scored three runs.

Scott (three RBIs, home run, two walks, stolen base, run scored), Abbadessa (two RBIs, run scored, double) and
junior Mason Morgan (two runs, double) each recorded two hits.

Freshman Fred Fields earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning and one strikeout, while graduate Jackson Hood struck out three Eagles for the ninth-inning save.

In the top of the second inning, Edgewood took the lead with a three-run homer.

The Eagles executed a single to the left side, allowing a runner to score for a 4-0 advantage in the next inning.


Millsaps would fight back with six runs in the fourth frame.

Pelle hit a double to right field and Berry was hit by a pitch. Scott stepped up moments later to sound off a three-run homer, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

walked, Page singled through the left side and Morgan reached on a bunt single.

 
Abbadessa put the Majors ahead for the first time in the contest at 5-4 after a double to right field. Morgan advanced to third, scoring Page and Ousley 

Topping off the inning, Bounds grounded to Edgewood's shortstop to send Morgan home pushing Millsaps ahead, 6-4.
 
In the top of the seventh inning, Edgewood reclaimed their lead, 8-6 after hitting a three-run and solo home run.
 

Millsaps clawed to within one run Ousley singled to right center and plated Berry from second.
 
The bottom of the eighth inning saw Millsaps grab the final lead change. Morgan doubled to left field to begin the frame. Moments later Ware would be sent to first base following a hit by pitch.  

Abbadessa then singled to Edgewood's pitcher with a bunt to load the bases.


Bounds scored Morgan on sacrifice fly to right field. Berry then rocked his second home run in back-to-back games to provide Millsaps a 11-8 advantage.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Hood stepped in to pitch and close the game out strong. Hood struck out three batters on the mound helping the Majors hold an 11-8 win over Edgewood on Saturday.
 
 
Game 3, W: Millsaps 6, Edgewood 5
 
Sunday's Game Three was moved to Charlie Donald Field on the campus of Holmes Community College due to weather.

Pelle was the ninth-inning hero, sailing a grand slam over the right-field wall for the walk-off. He posted five RBIs, two hits, two runs and a stolen base

Scott (RBI, double), graduate Case Page and Morgan (run, hit by pitch) each notched two hits.


Sixth year Wil Wood tossed 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts and one earned run. He held the visitors to three walks, six hits and one earned run.

Edgewood scored first off a double before
Bounds responded with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the inning. Pelle's sacrifice fly to center field  sent Bounds home with an RBI, tying the contest at 1-1. 
 

 
In the top of the fifth inning, Edgewood reclaimed their lead at 2-1, following a single to right field with a runner on third.
 
With the loaded bases, a double play by the Majors would put away the inning.   
 
Millsaps batted back into a 2-2 draw in the bottom of the fifth. Pelle singled to the pitcher with and stole second base.   
 
Scott then singled to left field, allowing Pelle to touch home plate to keep the Majors' momentum going.  
 
However, Edgewood reclaimed their lead at 4-2 with two runs and three hits in the seventh.  
 
A sacrifice fly to center field extended the Eagles' advantage to 5-2 in the top of the eighth.
 
In the bottom of the ninth the Majors' offense again came to life. Morgan was hit by a pitch, Abbadessa reached on a fielder's choice and junior pinch hitter Sam Thomas walked to load the bases with one out.
 
Pelle stepped up to the bat and worked ahead to a 3-1 count. He sailed the pitch for a grand slam over the right-field fence to clear the bases and send the bench into a roar at home base.
 
The Kenner, La., native's walk-off grand slam topped the Eagles in the bottom of the ninth inning, cementing a 6-5 comeback victory.
