Men’s Basketball Quartet Garner SAA Postseason Accolades

Nicholas Ughovwa Named Defensive Athlete of the Year

CANTON, Ga.  The Southern Athletic Association head basketball coaches voted and four members from the Millsaps men's basketball program earned postseason honors All-Conference, announced by the league office on Tuesday.

Senior Nicholas Ughovwa earned Defensive Player of the Year status, junior Dakota Gasca was selected All-SAA Honorable Mention alongside classmate Caleb Kent. Graduate TJ Hogan was selected to the All-SAA Sportsmanship Team.

After a stellar season, Ughovwa was named Defensive Athlete of the Year, becoming the Millsaps men's basketball player since Justin Van Pelt (2019-20). 
 
The Sulphur, La., native leads the conference with 48 blocks, while ranking 29th across NCAA Division III. His 1.85 blocks per game are currently 39th nationally as well. 
 
Ughovwa started in all 26 games for the Majors during his senior campaign. He averaged 8.4 points per game and ranks 10th in the league with 142 rebounds (5.5 rpg).

The post player contested 25 steals and 18 assists. On Feb. 1, Ughovwa set a career-high with 23 points against Sewanee.

Gasca was named All-SAA Honorable Mention by ranking third in the conference with 48 steals and second on the team with 11.1 points per game.

The Psychology major appeared in 25 games and was fourth in the SAA in free-throw percentage at 76.5 percent (88-of-115). He also stands eighth in assists with a team-best 74.

Kent made the All-SAA Honorable Mention list as well. The Madison, Miss., product led the team with 14.6 points per contest and 365 total points.

The Holmes Community College transfer finished the season with eight double-doubles, 29 steals, and six blocks. He appeared in 25 games with 52 assists.

Additionally, Kent was fifth in the conference in rebounding (7.4 rpg) and seventh in field goal percentage at 47.9 percent.

Hailing from Hattiesburg, Miss., Hogan received praise for making the SAA All-Sportsmanship Team. The guard shot 71.4 percent (25-of-35) from the free throw line, while accumulating 71 rebounds, 19 steals and 14 assists.
