JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team closed the weekend out strong by downing Hendrix and securing two of three wins to claim the series. The Majors bettered the Warriors 6-4 in Game One on Friday. Both teams split a doubleheader at Twenty Field on Saturday.
Millsaps (16-6, 4-2) moved into a tie with Berry College (12-9, 2-1 SAA) atop the SAA standings early in conference play. Hendrix closed the weekend at 10-11 overall and 4-2 in SAA action.
Game 1: Millsaps 6, Hendrix 4, W
The Majors used the long ball to their advantage in Game One, scoring all six runs off three homers in Game One on Friday.
Junior Mason Morgan (home run, two runs) and senior Gray Berry (run, hit by pitch) both batted 2-for-3 against the Warriors.
Sixth year Branyan Bounds recorded his second home run of the season. The Slidell, La., native batted 2-for-4 on the night while recording two runs and a pair of RBIs from the homer.
Senior Bradley Pelle highlighted his fifth home run of the season while contesting three RBIs, a run scored and a walk.
Classmate Nick Tarantino pitched six innings on the mound. The Convington, La., product strucked out three batters while allowing only two runs, five hits and a walk.
Redshirt junior Will Norris struck out two batters in three innings pitched to earn the save. Norris saw three hits, two runs and one walk against his conference opponents.
Hendrix opened the game in the top of the first inning with a 1-0 advantage after a sacrifice fly led a runner from third to home base.
In the bottom of the second inning, Bounds sounded off on a two-RBI home run to left field to score Morgan, giving the Majors a 2-1 lead.
A pitching duel ensued until the sixth inning when the Warriors responded with another sacrifice fly to draw the contest even at 2-2.
Morgan quickly responded by blasting another home run for the Majors in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the team back ahead at 3-2.
The Majors continued to dominate against their conference foe in the bottom of the seventh frame after Pelle smacked a three-run homer to score both Bounds and Berry.
After being down 6-2, the Warriors added two runs in the top of the eighth inning to attempt a comeback.
Hendrix doubled in the ninth, but Norris closed out the inning with three ground outs to take down the Warriors, 6-4 on Friday.
Game 2: Hendrix 9, Millsaps 4, L
The teams faced off in a Saturday doubleheader with a nine- and seven-inning game.
Senior Gray Berry batted 3-for-4, recording two RBIs, one run and a hit by pitch in Game One of the day.
Freshman Cam Cressend registered 1.1 innings in relief where he struck out two batters, while allowing one hit, two walks and two runs against his opponents.
Junior Sam Thomas held the Warriors scoreless in the ninth with one walk and hit allowed.
Hendrix again scored first in the opening inning after a walk and double to left-center field with two outs.
The Warriors added a run in the fourth inning courtesy of a walk, steal and pair of wild pitches to extend their margin to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth frame, the Majors cut into the deficit with a run. Berry reached base with a hit by pitch and stole second. He would later score after two Warrior wild pitches.
However, the Majors fell behind 6-1 after Hendrix posted a run in the sixth and utilized back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh.
Millsaps fought back into the contest after Berry singled to the left field to bring Bounds home in the eighth.
Moments later, a Hendrix wild pitch would advance Pelle to second, Berry to third and freshman Wes Carr home to shorten the Majors' deficit to 6-4.
In the top of the ninth frame, Hendrix erupted with three runs off two hits and three walks to increase their lead to 9-4.
The Warriors maintained their advantage with three more outs defensively to claim the contest.
Game 3: Millsaps 11, Hendrix 10, W (7 Inn.)
Pelle recorded his sixth home run of the season in the final game of the series, which was played to seven innings.
The Kenner, La., native also batted 3-for-5 on the day while registering three runs and two RBIs.
Berry also had a great performance, batting 2-for-4 inside the batter's box while accumulating two doubles, a pair of RBIs and two runs. He was also hit by a pitch.
Page (two RBIs, two runs, double, walk, stolen base, hit by pitch) and Ousley (three RBIs, run, double, walk, hit by pitch) both batted 1-for-2 in Game Three.
Bounds finished with one hit as well. The Slidell, La., native also added one run and a walk.
Freshman Luke Hamblen finished out the top of the sixth and seventh with 1.1 innings pitched. He struck out two batters allowing only one hit, one walk and zero runs. The Cordova, Tenn., product garnered his first collegiate win of his career in an 11-10 triumph over the Warriors.
In the bottom of the first inning, Berry led the Majors off with a leadoff double to right field.
Millsaps jumped ahead, 1-0 after Page later grounded out to the Warriors shortstop to score Berry.
Ousley closed out the inning with a double to center field, sending Pelle home to put Millsaps on top at 2-0.
After the Majors' great performance in the first inning, Hendrix battled back in the second with one run and three in the third to take their first lead at 4-2.
Pelle immediately answered with a two-run homer to knot the matchup at 4-4 in the bottom half of the third inning.
Moments later, Ousley reached on a fielder's choice as Page came home to put the Majors back ahead, 5-4.
In the top of the fourth inning, Hendrix replied with three runs off four hits and an error to regain their lead at 7-5.
Millsaps then cut their deficit to 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth when Berry doubled home Bounds from second base.
The Warriors again answered back in the top of the sixth inning with three runs courtesy of three hits, two walks, two hit by pitches and a wild pitch.
Not giving up, Millsaps stood their ground and attacked the Warriors in the bottom of the sixth frame for a five-run comeback.
Pelle led the inning off with a single forcing a Hendrix pitching change. Page doubled down the left-field line to cut the disadvantage down to 10-7.
Moments later, Morgan walked and senior Evan Scott was hit by pitch to load the bases.
Ousley then walked to score Page to narrow the gap down to 10-8.
Hendrix made their third pitching change of the inning before a Ware sacrifice fly sent Morgan home.
Freshman Josh Ingram followed by stepping into the box as a pinch hitter. The Vidalia, La., native would be hit by a pitch to send Scott home and tie the contest at 10-10.
Hendrix saw their final pitching change of the day before Berry would reach first base on fielder's choice to score Ousley and give the Majors their lead back in the next at-bat.
In the top of the seventh inning, Hamblen struck out the last batter looking with two runners on to take down the Warriors in a thrilling 11-10 comeback triumph on Saturday.
The Majors will next host Belhaven in the Cowboy Maloney Series, beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
