Baseball Bested by Belhaven in Cowboy Maloney Series Finale

Majors Battle Back, Fall Short 10-5 on Tuesday

PEARL, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team managed a late-game rally, but it was not enough as Belhaven claimed the Cowboy Maloney Series win, 10-5 in Game Three at Trustmark Park on Tuesday.

Millsaps (24-11) used seven pitchers like the last matchup with Belhaven (24-11) on April 1. The Blazers scored in six seperate innings, but graduate Clay Busby tossed a scoreless eighth frame with a strikeout and walk against.

Offensively the Majors scored twice in both the seventh and eighth innings. Senior Bradley Pelle was credited with a hit and reached base late off a charged error. He added a walk, stolen base and sored a run.

Classmate Evan Scott batted 1-for-2 with an RBI sacrifice fly, run scored and walked. Graduate Case Page added a hit, while junior Mason Morgan (hit by pitch), graduate Branyan Bounds (walk, hit by pitch, run) and freshman Wes Carr each tallied an RBI.

The Majors scored first in the opening inning after Berry opened with a hit by pitch and reached third on a passed ball. Pelle walked and the pair stole second and third base. Scott stepped up and drove the ball out to center field and scored Pelle off of third base.

Belhaven scored once in the second, three more times in the third and twice in the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage. A bases-loaded hit by pitch then made it 7-1 through five innings.

Pelle then reached with a single into right field with one out in the sixth. However, Belhaven escaped with a double play in the next at-bat.

The Blazers an eighth run in the sixth with a single, steal, fly out and second single.

In response, the Majors scored two runs in the seventh. Ousley led off with a single. A pair of hit batters then loaded the bases.

Ware brought in a run after forcing an error at third. Carr then cut the deficit to 8-3 with an RBI ground out to the pitcher.

Belhaven answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh before Millsaps fired back with another pair of runs in the eighth.

Pelle reached on an error, Page singled to left and Scott walked to load the bases. Morgan followed with a hit by pitch to bring Pelle in for the inning's first run. Bounds then managed a hard-fought walk to bring home Page. A double play ended the opportunity two batters later.

Belhaven posted three more outs defensively to claim the Cowboy Maloney Series, 2-1 with a 10-5 win on Tuesday.

The Majors will be back in action and resume Southern Athletic Association play on Friday. A noon CT doubleheader will begin the series with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
