Volleyball Challenged By Conference Ranked Opponents over Weekend

Majors Topped by Colonels, Vikings, Tigers in SAA Mega Pod

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.  The Millsaps volleyball team fell to Centre College, No. 15 Berry College and No. 12 Trinity University over the weekend in the SAA Mega Pod inside the Cage Center.

Match 1: Centre 3, Millsaps 1
(25-20, 12-25, 18-25, 17-25)


Senior Mallory Richardson recorded 10 kills and added three blocks, contributing significantly to the team's offensive and defensive efforts.

Classmate Olivia Danos excelled defensively with 18 digs and added two service aces.

Fourth-year student Ally Baer provided strong support at the net with five block assists and contributed seven kills.

Freshman Rachel Zamjahn facilitated the offense with 23 assists and collected eight digs.

Millsaps opened the first set with consistent offensive pressure, beginning with a kill by senior Trista Naquin to level the score early.

The team capitalized on Centre's errors and built momentum through targeted kills by Richardson and sophomore Zoë LaCaze, pushing the score to 5-2.

Centre attempted to respond, closing the gap to 7-7, but Millsaps regained control with strategic plays, including a kill by freshman Tatum Husby and a service ace by Baer, expanding the lead to 20-16.

Millsaps maintained composure, utilizing a kill by LaCaze and closing the set with a decisive kill from Richardson, securing the set at 25-20.

The second set commenced with Centre quickly gaining momentum, capitalizing on a series of attack errors and a bad set from the Majors' side.

Centre established an early lead with the score reaching 6-0 before the Majors earned a point due to a service error by Centre.

Despite a few errors from Centre, the Majors struggled to narrow the gap significantly.

Millsaps managed a brief scoring run when Richardson delivered a kill, bringing the score to 12-5.

However, Centre responded effectively, maintaining their advantage with consistent offensive plays and service aces, pushing the score to 20-9.

Millsaps continued to fight back with contributions from Baer, but Centre's lead proved insurmountable. The set concluded with Centre taking it 25-12.

In the third set, Centre established early control with a 3-0 lead, capitalizing on two kills.

Millsaps responded with a series of plays, including a kill by Richardson and a block by Baer and LaCaze, leveling the score at 3-3.

A brief exchange of points followed, with the Majors tying the score again at 6-6 through an effective offensive sequence led by Richardson.

Millsaps then surged ahead, capturing a 10-8 advantage with a service ace by freshman Atlee Gonzales and a kill from Baer.

However, Centre countered with a run of their own, regaining the lead at 15-14.

Millsaps fought to keep it close, with LaCaze contributing a kill to narrow the gap to 20-18.

Despite the Majors' efforts, Centre closed the set with a decisive stretch, securing the final points through a combination of attack errors and a service ace, concluding the set with a 25-18 victory.

In the fourth set, Millsaps opened with momentum as Richardson executed a kill, assisted by Zamjahn, which initiated an early lead.

Baer extended the advantage with impactful plays, including a kill and contributing to a block alongside Zamjahn, which pushed the Majors ahead 3-1.

However, Centre responded with a series of successful plays, highlighted by a service ace from Riley Snowden, which shifted the momentum and gave the Colonels a 6-5 margin.

Centre capitalized on unforced errors by Millsaps to establish a lead, but the Majors fought back with a run highlighted by Danos's service aces, leveling the score at 12-12.

Despite a resilient effort from the Majors, Centre managed to regain control with a decisive series of plays, extending their lead to 18-12.

Millsaps continued to press with contributions from Baer and Husby, narrowing the gap to 20-17.

In the closing stages, Centre maintained pressure and secured the set with a final sequence of successful attacks, concluding with a kill and five consecutive points.

The fourth set ended with Centre prevailing, 25-17 over the Majors.


Match 2: Berry 3, Millsaps 0
(13-25, 20-25, 17-25)


Naquin led Millsaps offensively, recording 10 kills with a .444 hitting percentage in three sets. Zamjahn facilitated the offense with 22 assists, contributing significantly to the team's attacking plays.

Danos provided defensive stability with 11 digs, while freshman Laila Fredieu added nine digs to bolster the team's defensive efforts in the second match on Saturday.

No. 15 and host Berry capitalized on a series of attack errors and service aces to extend their lead to 12-3. Millsaps managed to cut into the deficit with kills from Baer and Richardson, narrowing the score to 13-8. Despite this effort, Berry pulled away again, leading 20-11.

Millsaps continued to fight, with freshman Madelynn Sasser contributing two kills, yet the team couldn't halt Berry's momentum. The set concluded with Berry securing a 25-13 victory, as Millsaps aimed to regroup for the following set.

The second set began with Millsaps taking an early 3-0 lead, highlighted by a kill from Naquin, set up by Zamjahn. They maintained a slight edge thanks to contributions from Baer and Sasser, but Berry managed to pull even at 7-7, capitalizing on a service ace and attack error.

Midway through, Millsaps regained momentum with a series of Berry errors, closing the gap to 15-14. However, Berry responded strongly, extending their lead with a series of kills, moving ahead 18-14. Millsaps continued to fight back with key plays from Naquin and Richardson, but Berry closed out the set 25-20 with a final kill.

Millsaps started the third set with a kill from Naquin, assisted by Zamjahn, but momentum quickly shifted as Berry capitalized on service errors and defensive plays to build a lead.

Despite efforts, including another kill from Naquin and a service ace by Zamjahn, Berry maintained control through consistent scoring, extending their advantage.

Millsaps managed to cut into the deficit with contributions such as a block by Baer and Richardson at 22-14, but Berry's attack remained effective. A late kill by Richardson kept Millsaps competitive, yet Berry secured the set, 25-17 with a decisive close.


Match 3: Trinity 3, Millsaps 1
(26-24, 14-25, 19-25, 13-25)

Zamjahn led the Majors' with a double-double of 33 assists and 14 digs, contributing significantly to the team's playmaking. Naquin recorded seven kills on 21 attempts, achieving a hitting percentage of .286.

Baer contributed nine kills, a block and one ace, accumulating a total of 10.5 points. Richardson tallied 10 kills while adding one block on Sunday.

Millsaps initiated the match with a strong start, capitalizing early with a service ace by Fredieu.

The team maintained momentum as Richardson's effective attacks, complemented by assists from Zamjahn, helped extend the lead.

The Majors capitalized on several attack errors from Trinity and four straight points, resulting in a 10-5 advantage.

As the set progressed, Millsaps continued to assert control, with Richardson and Naquin contributing key kills to widen the gap.

Despite a late rally from Trinity, narrowing the score to a 24-24 tie, the Majors secured the set with decisive plays, including a kill by Baer. The first set concluded with Millsaps ahead, 26-24 following a final a setting error by Trinity.

Trinity surged at the start of the second set, opening with a 4-0 run that included a service ace and a kill by the Tigers.

The Majors responded with a point from Sasser, assisted by Zamjahn, cutting into Trinity's momentum briefly.

Despite this, Trinity maintained their lead with a series of consecutive points, extending the score to 8-3.

Millsaps managed to counter with a kill by Baer and a service ace from Gonzales, narrowing the gap to 8-5.

However, Trinity continued to capitalize on the Majors' errors and their own offensive plays. The set closed with a final score of 25-14 in favor of Trinity, tying up the match.

The third set began with Millsaps striving to shift momentum. Despite an early challenge, Naquin and Baer quickly responded with kills, narrowing the gap to 4-3.

A balanced attack from Zamjahn and junior Caroline Russo assist facilitated a brief Major lead at 6-5, showcasing effective teamwork.

As the set progressed, Millsaps battled to keep the score close, highlighted by service aces from Fredieu and Gonzales.

Despite strategic plays and key kills from Sasser and junior Amelia Bohl, the team faced consistent pressure from Trinity's offense.

Trinity ultimately closed the set by pulling ahead with a final score of 25-19, despite the Majors' determined efforts to keep the contest competitive.

Millsaps opened the fourth set with an early point following a service error from Trinity.

Despite a kill by Sasser, the Majors faced a challenging stretch as Trinity capitalized on a service ace and several kills, establishing a 5-2 lead.

Millsaps managed to break Trinity's run with a kill from Baer, yet Trinity continued to extend their advantage through consistent offensive plays, reaching an 11-5 margin.

Richardson and Baer contributed kills to keep the Majors in contention, but Trinity maintained pressure with timely service aces and attacking plays.

Millsaps' efforts to narrow the gap included a service ace by Bohl and additional kills from Baer, Naquin and Richardson.

However, Trinity sustained their momentum and concluded the set with a 25-13 win, sealing the match.

Looking ahead, the Majors will host Tougaloo College on Friday, October 3 at 6 p.m. The match will take place inside the Hangar Dome.  Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
