CLINTON, Miss. — Both talented and young Millsaps College men's and women's cross country programs excelled on a muggy and humid evening in the Mississippi College 5K Opener, Sponsored by Southern Farm Bureau Life on Friday. The men's team placed sixth with 183 points in a talented field of 16 total NCAA Division I, II and III schools as well as NAIA and NJCAA squads at the Choctaw Trails.
Freshmen
Devion Hart (20th; 16 minutes, 12.9 seconds) and
Dallas Stricker (27th; 16:41.1) both placed inside the top 30. Fellow classmates
Mason Castleberry (58th; 18:00.5) and
Benjamin Sylve (80th, 19:11.6) also had solid individual showings.
Sophomore
Phillip Antis (86th; 19:36.6) completed the Major scoring. First-year collegiate runners
Wyatt Wheeler (113th; 22:17.0) and
Cameron Anderson (116th; 22:39.3) also performed well against 137 finishers.
On the women's side, sophomore
Claudia Dempsey had a very strong time and finish despite the weather conditions. She claimed 26th place with a time of 21:45.2. Freshman
Molly Northam ran strong (71st; 26:30.8) in the field of 96 finishers.
The Millsaps College men's and women's cross country squads will next compete in the Rhodes College Cross Country Invitational at Shelby Farms in Memphis on Saturday, Sept. 20. The men will race at 8 a.m., which will be followed by the women's competition at 8:50 a.m.
