Men’s Basketball’s Second-Half Comeback Falls Just Short to Trinity

Valiant Effort Sees Conference Newcomers Better Majors, 73-69 on Sunday

JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps College men's basketball team gave all they had on the court but came up short to Trinity University, 73-69 in a tightly contested matchup on Sunday inside the Hangar Dome.

The Majors managed to close the gap with a 42-point second half, highlighted by 17 steals and 33 points from the bench, but the Tigers' 18 successful free throws and 22 fast-break points were pivotal in securing the win.

Millsaps (11-5, 2-3 SAA) recorded 35 total rebounds, while Trinity (12-4, 4-1 SAA) held off the Majors late.

Senior Caleb Kent scored 15 points and collected  a season-high of 10 rebounds, contributing significantly on both ends with three steals. Kent also shot 7-of-11 from the floor.

Junior Cameron Lumar added 15 points and recorded  a season-best of four steals, showcasing his defensive contribution.

Freshman Luke LeFors finished with nine points while making three shots from beyond the arc.

Junior David Combest Jr. collected nine rebounds and added four assists, while also tallying three steals.

The game began with Millsaps taking an early lead, fueled by a Kent layup and dunk within the first two minutes.

Junior Jaxon Toney extended the advantage with an and-one layup and free throw, putting the Majors ahead 11–5.

However, Trinity gradually closed the gap and overtook Millsaps with a layup at the midpoint of the first half, giving the Tigers a 20–18 lead.

The half ended with teams traded buckets as the Tigers finished, leading 33–27. Millsaps started the second half with a quick layup by Toney, assisted by Combest Jr., narrowing the gap to four points. The Tigers responded with a 14-point lead following an 11-0 run.

Despite trailing, Millsaps kept the contest close, highlighted by a critical stretch where LeFors hit three consecutive three-pointers, cutting the deficit to 56-47 with 9:16 left.

In the latter part of the second half, Millsaps managed to reduce the margin further with key contributions from Lumar, including a late three-pointer. However, Trinity capitalized on free throws to maintain their lead.

The half ended with a score of 73–69 in favor of the Tigers, as the Majors outscored their opponent 42–40 in the second half.
