JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps College women's basketball team held down the court in an impressive win over Berry College, 82-53 on Thursday night inside the Hangar Dome.
Millsaps (18-6, 9-4 SAA) outscored Berry (14-11, 8-5 SAA), 19-7 in the second quarter to pull away.
The Majors dominated the paint, scoring 40 points, and secured a 40-27 rebounding edge. The Vikings struggled to find their rhythm, shooting just 2-for-16 from beyond the arc. Millsaps outshot Berry, 57 percent to 34 percent from the field as well.
Senior Elyse Warren posted a dominant performance with 22 points and 18 rebounds, adding two blocks and three steals.
Warren shot 8-of-13 from the floor in a double-double win against the Vikings.
Junior Garin Freeman contributed 18 points and recorded 10 assists, displaying a strong double-double performance.
The Little Rock, Ark., native was hot in tonight's matchup against the Vikings, shooting 7-of-11 from field goal range. She added four boards and a steal.
Junior Tia Anderson added 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Anderson added three rebounds and two assists.
Classmate Bailey Johnson scored 12 points, all from a 3-point range, converting 4-of-5 attempts from beyond the arc to dominate her opponents.
Millsaps took control early in the first quarter against Berry, jumping to a 13-0 lead.
Freeman opened the scoring with a layup and later contributed with an assist and a fastbreak layup.
Warren was active on both ends, securing several defensive rebounds and adding six points, including a layup that closed the quarter.
Despite a late three-pointer from the visitors, Berry trailed by 10 points at the end of the quarter.
Berry's offense struggled, shooting just 28.6 percent from the field in the opening frame, while Warren silenced the Vikings on a pair of blocks to control the paint.
The Memphis, Tenn., native started the second quarter for the Majors with a steal and a fast-break layup at 21 seconds in to extend the Millsaps lead to 22-10.
Senior Maddy Maw contributed a three-pointer at 8:43, assisted by Freeman, to push the score to 25-10.
Sophomore Ashlyn Hafley added another three-pointer for Millsaps at 5:53 on the clock, increasing the lead to 33-14.
Warren capped the quarter's scoring with a layup and a free throw with 57 seconds left, leaving the home team ahead, 39-17 at the half.
Millsaps extended its lead over Berry during the third quarter, with notable contributions from Anderson and Johnson.
Anderson scored a layup at 8:25 and followed it with a three-pointer at 7:49, while Johnson connected on three three-pointers, including one with 3:24 remaining as both teammates worked together.
Despite Berry's 20 points in the quarter, the Majors maintained control with a strong 25-point performance, capped by Freeman's layup as time expired, securing a 64-37 advantage.
Millsaps secured a strong victory in the fourth quarter, outscoring Berry, 18-16. The Vikings made efforts to close the gap with successful layups and free throws, but it was not enough to overcome their deficit as Millsaps continued to wear down the Vikings.
The Majors maintained their advantage through efficient shooting, including a three-pointer by Anderson with three minutes remaining, which helped solidify their lead and conclude the game with a decisive win.
A satisfied student section was treated to free food during the game as well as a terrific team performance on Thursday.
Millsaps will conclude the regular season and host Oglethorpe University for Senior Day on Saturday. Festivities are slated to happen prior to the 12 p.m. start. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
