Warren Sets Conference Rebounding Record in Win at Southwestern

Senior Now Holds 1,075 Boards after Victory on Friday

GEORGETOWN, Texas  —  The Millsaps women's basketball team secured a 75-68 victory against Southwestern University on Friday at the Corbin J. Robertson Center. 

Senior Elyse Warren has set the record for the most career rebounds in conference history, amassing a total of 1,075 rebounds in counting while playing for the Majors.  

Millsaps (14-6, 5-4 SAA) secured the win with a strong presence in the paint, outscoring the Pirates 46-34. The game featured 12 ties. 

Southwestern (12-9, 3-7 SAA) bench outnumbered the Majors 17-4 in total bench points.  

Junior Garin Freeman scored 27 points and added six rebounds in a strong offensive and defensive showdown on the night.

Warren contributed 21 points and dominated the glass with 17 rebounds in a dominant performance against the Pirates.

Junior Tia Anderson recorded 18 points, including two 3-pointers, and collected three steals while playing well on both ends of the court.

In the start of the first quarter, the Majors took a 7-0 lead following a three-point shot from junior Bailey Johnson and two successful baskets by Freeman. 

With 8:36 remaining on the clock, Warren grabbed her first rebound of the game to become the SAA All-Time Career Rebounding Leader. 

Moments later, Anderson moved the Majors ahead, 12-5, with a jump shot inside the paint to keep the Majors on top.

Following an impressive offensive effort by Anderson, she returned to the basket and successfully made a layup, extending the Majors' lead to 16-7 after securing a steal on defense. 

With 1:08 to go, the Pirates sank a three-pointer from downtown, cutting their deficit to just one point, 16-15. 

In the first quarter, Anderson secured the Majors' last point, but Southwestern responded with a layup, narrowing the score to 19-17 as the quarter came to an end. 

In the second quarter, both teams put on a show, exchanging points back and forth. However with 3:11 remaining on the clock, the Pirates sank a three-pointer to take the lead, 31-27. 

Freeman scored right before halftime, tying the game at 35-35. During the third quarter, Millsaps edged Southwestern outscoring the hosts 18-16 by capitalizing on turnovers and second-chance points.  

Millsaps forced four turnovers, resulting in four points off turnovers, and added four second-chance points to maintain a narrow lead.  Anderson collected her second steal of the matchup and found sophomore Ashlyn Hafley for a two-point shot, giving the Majors a three-point lead at 39-36. 

Both teams kept competing for the rest of the quarter while Millsaps held onto their lead. Warren ended the quarter on a high note with a layup, but Southwestern scored at the basket in the final seconds, as they looked to make a comeback down, 53-51.

In the fourth quarter, between 5:14 and 6:04 on the clock, Freeman heated back up on the court, making crucial layups to help the Majors take a 66-57 lead over Southwestern. 

Millsaps' interior play and defensive rebounds secured the final score of 75-68 to take down Southwestern on Friday. 

The Majors will be back in action on Sunday to battle Trinity University beginning at 12 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
