Baseball Falls to LeTourneau in Three-Game Series over Weekend

Majors Win Game One on Friday, Fall to Yellowjackets in Saturday Doubleheader

LONGVIEW, Texas — The Millsaps baseball team faced a challenging series, falling to LeTourneau University, 2-1 over the weekend at Conrad-Vernon Field. 

Game 1, W: LeTourneau 5, Millsaps 4

Sophomore Wesley Grant had a standout performance with two triples, while freshman Thomas Temple contributed two hits, a pair of RBIs, two walks, and a stolen base.

Redshirt junior Stewart Bonnecaze allowed only three earned runs over three innings of pitching on the mound, the Baton Rouge, La  native also struck out two batters on the hill.

Freshman Jackson Woolley recorded his first collegiate career win as a winning pitcher for the Majors. The Missouri, Texas product secured the victory with two scoreless innings.

The Majors recorded 11 hits and two triples, while LeTourneau managed six hits and a double. Both teams started off strong, scoring two runs apiece in the first inning.

Temple opened the scoring for Millsaps with a single, followed by senior Sam Thomas' hit and Grant's triple, giving the Majors an early 2-0 lead.

LeTourneau quickly tied the game at 2-2 following an RBI and a balk. The game remained tied until the third inning when the Yellowjackets edged ahead with an RBI double to take their first lead at 3-2.

Millsaps responded with a tying run in the seventh thanks to freshman Christian Kretzer's single and a fielder's choice by Thomas.

The Majors regained the lead in the eighth, but LeTourneau equalized again with an RBI single.

In the tenth, Grant's leadoff triple sealed a 5-4 victory for the Majors as he celebrated with his teammates on the triumph

 Game 2, W: LeTourneau 7, Millsaps 0 

In Game 2, Millsaps fell to LeTourneau with a 7-0 loss. The Yellowjackets took an early lead with an unearned run in the second inning and expanded it in the pivotal sixth inning with a six-run rally.

Freshman Hudson Moberly went two for three at the plate, and Temple went one for two in his at bats.

Sophomore John Montour delivered a strong performance for Millsaps, pitching 5 innings while only allowing two hits and no earned runs.

In the top of the fourth, Grant walked and next at bat Moberly then singled to advance Grant to second base.

Moberly and Grant both successfully stole second and third respectively but were left stranded to end the top of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Yellowjackets were able to capitalize on two pitching changes by the majors and extend the lead to seven to finish off the game.  

Game 3, L: LeTourneau 10, Millsaps 5 

Game 3 featured senior Ryan Laiche, pitching two innings and only one walk, and two strikeouts. Sophomore Cam Cressend, stood on the mound for three innings he allowed one walk and had a pair of strikeouts.

Senior Mason Morgan led the Majors with two hits and two RBIs, while Bonnecaze added two hits and a run.

The Majors jumped ahead 1-0 with an RBI single from Morgan, but LeTourneau responded with two runs in the first inning.

Millsaps tied the game 4-4 in the third with a three-run rally, but errors allowed LeTourneau to retake the lead. Back-to-back home runs in the sixth sealed the game for the Yellowjackets to take series over Millsaps.

The Majors will be back in action on Friday to face Edgewood University at home pitching slated to start at 3 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
