JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps College baseball team secured a dominant 16-1 victory over Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday at Twenty Field, followed by a decisive 12-2 win against North Park University later that evening.
Game 1: Millsaps 16, Hardin-Simmons 1 (7 inn.)
In Game One, Millsaps tallied 15 hits, including five doubles and a home run.
Junior Wesley Grant (three RBIs, three runs, double, walk, stolen base) and sophomore Wes Carr (two runs, double, two walks) both went 2-for-3 in batting against their opponents.
Freshman Hudson Moberly (two RBIs, one double, walk) and senior EJ Ousley (double, homerun) both went 2-for-4 in hitting an impressive Game One victory.
Sophomore John Montour pitched a complete game for Millsaps in the first match, securing a 7.0-inning performance.
Montour gave up just one run while pitching to 24 batters and struck out three during his time on the mound.
Millsaps took control of the game against Hardin-Simmons in the second inning when sophomore Carston Williams singled through the right side.
Freshman Thomas Temple then delivered an RBI single, bringing in Williams to pump up the team.
Grant having a great season, capped the inning with a two-RBI doublo to push the Majors ahead 3-0 after two innings.
In the fourth inning Millsaps extended their lead with a five-run surge senior Layne Cross doubled, and freshman Thomas Temple's single moved Cross to third base.
Moments later, Grant's sacrifice bunt brought in Cross, and Ousley followed with a three-run homer as he celebrated with his teammates.
An RBI single from senior Sam Thomas put the home team up 8-0 through four innings as Millsaps continued to power past the Vikings.
Hardin-Simmons managed a run in the fifth, but Millsaps responded with two more runs in the bottom half to keep the fire going.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Carr extended the Majors' lead to 10-1 with a double to left-center field, driving in Moberly and Grant for two RBIs.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Moberly topped the Vikings with a double that brought in two runners.
Carr's single and Williams's double further fueled the Majors' offense, wrapping up final score against North Park with a 16-1 victory in Game One on Saturday.
Game 2: Millsaps 12, North Park 2 (7 inn.)
Thomas went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double and a walk, against the Vikings, while Carr recorded his third career college home run on the season.
In Game Two, sophomore Cam Cressend pitched effectively, throwing 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and giving up only three hits while facing 18 batters.
Classmate Fred Fields took over the hill as well, pitching 3.0 innings and yielding only one hit while striking out three batters.
Millsaps scored five runs in the third inning, setting the tone for the remainder of the contest.
Carr put on performance in the second inning with a homer in his first bat of the contest.
Millsaps continued their offensive display in the third inning against North Park freshman Connor Kretzer singled and Grant doubled to right field, scoring Kretzer,
Ousley then delivered an RBI single through the middle, bringing Grant home.
Moments later, Carr's sacrifice fly allowed Ousley to advance to third, followed by Williams' ground-rule double, which brought in another run for the Majors.
Senior Sam Thomas capped off the inning with a two-RBI single, putting Millsaps ahead 6-1.
In the fifth inning, Thomas hit a double to center field, and freshman Dominic Mendieta followed with a triple to left field, driving in Thomas with an RBI.
Building on the Majors' strong showing on the field, Temple quickly responded by hitting a single to left field, allowing Mendieta to score and adding another RBI to the Majors' tally.
In the sixth inning against North Park, Millsaps continued to capitalize off the Vikings defensive mistakes.
Fields would make it a quick trip to the mound facing off against the opposing team to close out the inning.
Performing strongly during the game, Ousley and Moberly each earned a walk, and a mistake by North Park enabled two runners to score on an unearned run, extending the Majors' lead to 11-1.
The last scoring play for Millsaps occurred in the seventh inning when Ousley hit a sacrifice fly that brought Kretzer home, securing a 12-2 triumph over North Park.
