SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Millsaps College baseball team opened its conference play against No. 16 Trinity University, falling in a three-game series, 23-12, 10-8, and 10-0 over the weekend at the Trinity Baseball Field.
GAME 1: Trinity 23, Millsaps 12 (7 inn.)
Sophomore Kyle Veal Jr. finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while junior Wesley Grant batted 3-for-4, and sophomore Wes Carr recorded two hits.
Seniors EJ Ousley and Mason Morgan each hit a home run over the fence in their conference opener on the season against the Tigers on Friday, with Ousley driving in two runs and Morgan scoring three.
Classmate Andrew Bradley pitched 2.2 innings on the mound while recording three strikeouts.
Ousley put Millsaps on the board early with a leadoff home run to deep left field in the top of the first inning as he was praised by his teammates.
However, Trinity responded with six runs in the bottom inning, moving ahead 6–1 in favor of the home team.
In the third inning, Morgan hit a two-run homer to deep left field, cutting into Trinity's lead.
Millsaps added two more runs, narrowing the deficit, but Trinity scored once more to maintain a 13–5 lead through three innings.
The Majors battled back in the top of the fifth inning with three consecutive single hits by Wes, Cross, and Veal Jr.
Sophomore Carston Williams hit a two-RBI single up the middle, and Morgan added an RBI with a sacrifice fly, helping the Majors regain their energy.
However, Trinity answered with a six-run inning to push its lead to 19–9 after five innings of action.
In the seventh inning, Grant walked and sophomore Jackson Wall scored. Moments later, Carr singled to center field to send junior Anson Mo-Billiot home.
Veal Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to the right field to relieve freshman Jace Vasquez off the final plate. Millsaps played with heart every inning, falling to the Tigers, 23-12, in Game One.
GAME 2: Trinity 10, Millsaps 8
Grant delivered a strong performance with three hits, three runs including two doubles, one stolen base and scored three times in Game Two.
Morgan contributed by scoring two runs and adding two hits along with a stolen base.
Moberly recorded an RBI double and crossed the plate once. Veal Jr. drove in two runs with a double, finishing with one hit and one walk.
Freshman Sam Thomas delivered a strong performance in relief, pitching 1.1 innings without allowing a hit or a run while striking out two and issuing just one walk
Classmate Jackson Devey pitched 2.2 innings on the hill striking out five batters
Trinity took an early lead in the first inning with two RBI walks, giving it a 2–0 advantage.
By the third inning, Trinity extended its lead, capitalizing on multiple scoring plays, including a two-RBI single, increasing its lead to 7–0.
In the fourth inning, Grant sparked a rally for Millsaps with an infield single and a stolen base.
Morgan followed with a single, setting the stage for freshman Hudson Moberly's RBI double, bringing Grant home.
Carr's single and Veal Jr.'s two-RBI double further closed the gap, leaving Millsaps trailing 8–4 after four innings.
Millsaps' swift movement helped the team change momentum in the fifth inning.
Morgan's RBI single and a pair of wild pitches allowed two additional runs to score, bringing the Majors within two runs, 9–7 through five frames.
Trinity managed to add another unearned run in the sixth inning, pushing its lead to 10–7.
Millsaps' pitching held Trinity scoreless over the next two innings, and in the ninth inning.
Grant doubled and later scored on a wild pitch, but the rally fell short, as Trinity held on for a 10–8 win despite Millsaps' strong push to the end.
GAME 3: Trinity 10, Millsaps 0 (7 inn.)
Morgan made an impact with a double in his three plate appearances
Grant recorded a hit in his three trips to the plate, contributing to the team's efforts. .
Freshman Jackson Woolley struck out one batter in his brief 1.1 inning on the mound, allowing one hit and one walk.
Sophomore Luke Hamblen pitched 2.0 innings on the hill where he struck out three batters.
Trinity took command in the third inning, scoring seven runs.
In the sixth inning, the Tigers added another run extending its lead to 8-0 through six innings.
In the seventh inning, Trinity drove in two runs with a double, finishing the game at 10-0
Millsaps was unable to score, despite a double from Morgan in the sixth inning.
