Oglethorpe Tops Baseball, 10-7 in Series Finale

Griggs' Grand Slam Not Enough in Comeback Effort on Saturday

ATLANTA — The Millsaps College baseball team (11-16, 3-6 SAA) fell to Oglethorpe University (15-11, 6-3 SAA) by a final of 10-7 at Hermance Stadium on Saturday. The Majors rallied with a five-run sixth inning, but could not overcome the Stormy Petrels's pair of five-run frames in the third and fifth innings in Game Three of the series.

Sophomore Carston Williams posted three hits and scored two runs, showcasing a strong offensive presence. Freshman Michael Griggs delivered a pivotal pinch-hit grand slam, tallying four RBIs and scoring a run in his only plate appearance.

Sophomore Kyle Veal Jr. contributed significantly with two RBIs and a hit, reaching base twice on walks. Senior Sam Thomas consistently reached base, recording two hits and drawing two walks, further boosting the team's offensive efforts.

The third inning saw Millsaps get on the board first when Veal Jr. singled through the right side, bringing home sophomore Wes Carr and Williams. However, Oglethorpe responded with a significant rally, highlighted by Trey Kinnan's grand slam, giving the team a 5-2 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Stormy Petrels extended their advantage with five more runs. A pair of sacrifice flies and a three-run double were key plays, pushing the score to 10-2.

Millsaps mounted a comeback attempt in the sixth inning. Senior Layne Cross and junior Wesley Grant both walked before Williams singled to load the bases. Senior Mason Morgan then drew a walk to score Cross. Griggs then made a significant impact with a pinch-hit grand slam, narrowing the deficit to 10-7.

Oglethorpe's defense held strong in the remaining innings, keeping the Majors from adding further runs. Millsaps put two baserunners on base in the ninth with a hit by pitch and a walk, but a final flyout and strikeout closed out the game at 10-7.

The Majors will remain on the road and next travel to face Sewanee in Tennessee for a three-game series. The opening game is slated for noon on Saturday, with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
