CONWAY & BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Millsaps College men's soccer team traveled to the Natural State, where they boasted a 2-0 victory on Friday night against Hendrix College at the Warrior Soccer Field. The Majors concluded their stay in Arkansas, falling to Lyon College, 2-1 on Sunday at Marshall Huser Field.
Match 1: Millsaps College 2, Hendrix College 0
Hendrix mounted a first-half performance with two shots and three corners during a sustained stretch of pressure as Millsaps maintained their composure to scrap up the triumph.
The visitors continued earning set-piece chances after that, including a stretch with four corners and three shots, while a later run of fouls and cards gave the match a more competitive atmosphere.
The Majors finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots and put 10 attempts on goal to Hendrix's five.
Junior Ellis Dykes scored his first goal of the season, putting both of his shots on target.
Freshman Reid Brenner led Millsaps with three shots, including two on goal.
Senior Braden Walters added a goal on his lone shot of the match as took care of business against the Warriors.
Sophomore Edward Steinwand recorded five saves across 90 minutes of action to earn the shutout.
Dykes kicking the ball into the Warriors territory, put Millsaps in front at 17:53, scoring the opening goal to give the Majors a 1-0 lead.
Earlier, Millsaps built pressure with a corner kick and three shots in the first 14th minutes, including quality shots taken by freshman Zachary Diamond and sophomore Raul Blandon on their executions.
After Dykes' goal, Millsaps kept looking for another score as the Tuscaloosa, Ala., native had a shot saved in the 23rd minute, while Steinwand answered Hendrix's chances with saves at the 25th and 42nd minute.
Millsaps added late pressure with corner kicks at 34:47 and 43:34, and junior Alden Romano shot wide in the 45th minute as the Majors held off the Warriors, 1-0 going into halftime.
Taking charge, Walters gave Millsaps their final scoring in the 57th minute to extend Millsaps' lead to 2–0.
The Majors responded for the final time as sophomore Abram Lawless shot and an 88:20 corner before closing out the 2–0 victory over Hendrix on Friday night.
Match 2: Lyon College 2, Millsaps College 1
Diamond registered his first goal of his collegiate career; junior Alden Davenport boasted two saves against the Scots.
In the first half, the Scots took an early 1-0 lead over the Majors at 9:33 to end the Majors' five-plus-game shutout, not giving up a goal on the season against their opponents.
Diamond brought the Majors to a 1-1 draw at the 15th minute, helping the Majors stay active. Moments later Millsaps responded with two corner kicks, looking to hold the Scots by one point.
In the second half, the Majors kept Lyon off the board until the 85th minute, when the Scots extended their margin to 2-1, collecting their final score of the matchup.
Earlier, junior Harrison Williams put Millsaps's first shot of the half on frame in the 58th minute, while Davenport answered a Lyon chance with a save shot at 61:49 while the Majors contained both sides of the field.
Millsaps then generated set-piece pressure, earning corners at 75:13 and 81:23 before Lyon's goal, and continued forward with another corner at 83:54.
Graduate Jannik Stockfisch followed that late corner with a shot saved by the Scot at 85:19, but Millsaps could not find the equalizer before time expired, falling to the Scots, 2-1 on Sunday.
