JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College men's soccer team remained undefeated at home after rolling past Centenary College, 1-0, on Friday night at Harper Davis Field in front of enthusiastic fans.
The Majors finished with a 24-14 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, while sophomore Edward Steinwand made five saves to complete the shutout against the Gents.
The biggest contributor to the Majors' success in tonight's matchup against the Gents was their ability to maintain composure, work together as a team, and play with confidence.
Freshman Reid Brenner delivered against Centenary with the Majors' only goal and finished with five shots, putting two on frame. Classmate Zachary Diamond recorded an assist and led the Majors with six shots, including two on goal. Steinwand made five saves over 90 minutes and posted a shutout. Sophomore Myles Walden added four shots, with two on goal.
In the first half, the Majors generated 14 shots and seven corner kicks to keep the match scoreless. Brenner put a shot on frame in the fourth minute, and Millsaps followed with four corner kicks from the 10th to the 13th minute, including a saved attempt by senior Braden Walters and another shot from Diamond, as the Millsaps showed no remorse against their opponents in tonight's action.
Steinwand became a problem for the Gents between the 29th and 30th minutes, making consecutive saves to keep their attack off the scoreboard. The Majors pushed again late in the half, generating shots from sophomore Abram Lawless, junior Alden Romano, freshman Justin Park, and graduate student Jannik Stockfisch alongside Walden after the 35th minute. However, the half ended scoreless at 0-0.
In the second half, Millsaps showed its determination to secure the win in front of the home crowd. Brenner put the Majors ahead 1-0 in the 46th minute, scoring off a corralled pass from Diamond after Diamond's shot struck the right post.
Steinwand helped protect the lead during a Centenary push, making big saves in the 68th and 71st minutes to keep the Gents from finding the back of the net.
The Majors continued to find looks through Walden, Lawless, Romano, and Diamond, including saved attempts from Walden and Diamond. The half grew more physical late, but the Majors held the 1-0 margin through the final whistle to finish off the win.
