Doug Fortenberry returned to the Millsaps College coaching staff in August of 2020.
He had worked on the Majors' staff from 2006-2014 and then again from 2017-19 as an Outfield Instructor. During his first stint in Jackson the team won a program-record 38 games during the 2013 season, winning a NCAA Regional Championship and advancing to the College World Series.
Fortenberry was on staff for other program highlights such as the earning the No. 1 national ranking during 2009 and conference tournament championships in 2006 and 2013.
Under his direction: two outfielders signed professional contracts, four outfielders earned All-American recognition, six outfielders earned All-Region honors, 18 outfielders were named All-Conference, one outfielder was named the South Region Player of the Year, and one outfielder earned a South Region Gold Glove Award.
Prior to joining the coaching staff at Millsaps, Fortenberry worked as the Hitting Instructor at Hinds Community College from 1996-1998, 2003-2005, and 2015-2016. During his time in Raymond: three players were named All-State, four players were named All-Region and one player was offered a professional baseball contract.
The Eagles played in the Region XXIII Tournament all three seasons, and went on to make their first Mississippi JUCO State Tournament appearance in nearly ten years.
During the era from 1996-1998 the team tied or broke six different school hitting records and the 2015 team held the No. 1 spot in the national rankings for the majority of the season, winning a state championship and ending the season at No. 5.
Fortenberry also has prior experience at Mississippi College were he helped lead the Choctaws to the the school's first American Southwest Conference Tournament appearance in 2001.
From 1999-2000 he was an Outfield Instructor at staff at the University of Mississippi. In 1999 the Rebels were ranked as high as No. 20 in the country and made the school's first regional appearance since 1995. He had one outfielder earn All-SEC honors, and four outfielders get the chance to play professional baseball.
Fortenberry holds his Bachelor of Science in Biology Education from Mississippi State University and a Master of Science in Sports Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi.
