Sophomore Season (2019-20): Named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll... Gillihan played in 26 games, and made 10 starts for the Majors...He averaged 3.9 points and 2.8 rebounds per game... He scored a season-high 15 points in a win over Hendrix College on February 9th... He pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in the SAA Semifinal win over Oglethorpe University on February 23rd.
Freshman Season (2018-19): Named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll...Voted the Newcomer of the Year at the 2019 'Ad Excellentiam Awards'... He played in all 26 games and made 14 starts for the Majors... Averaged 4.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game... Finished the year third on the team with 22 made three-point shots... After helping lead the Majors to a 79-57 road win over Birmingham Southern College on February 16th, Gillihan was named the SAA Player of the Week. He scored a career-high 22 points and pulled down six rebounds. In the win he shot 87.5 percent from the field, including a perfect 6-6 performance from beyond the three-point line.
Prior to Millsaps: 4x letterwinner in both basketball and football... Winner of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award... 3x 1st Team All-Conference honoree (basketball), 2x 1st Team All-Conference honoreee (football)... Earned the Don Souder Award as the Senior Athlete of the Year at Parklane Academy... Basketball team was the state runner-up twice, and the football team was the state runner-up in 2017... He was the Valedictorian of his graduating class and a Parklane Academy Star Student.
Personal: Majoring in Biology... Winner of the Joseph B. Price General Chemistry Award... Member of Phi Eta Sigma (former Vice President), AED Pre-Health Honorary, Student Affiliates of the American Chemistry Society and an associate member of the Tri-Beta Biology Society... He is active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) where he is an Executive Officer and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)... Newlon works on campus as a Residential Assistant... His mother played basketball at Mississippi State, his aunt played basketball at the University of Memphis and his grandfather played baseball at Lipscomb University.
