Gentry Johnson

Gentry Johnson was named Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Millsaps College in August 2023.

Since his appointment, Johnson has led the Majors to marked improvement and competitive success. Under his direction, the program has achieved several statistical milestones.  i In his second season, Millsaps recorded its highest win total since 2019 including the fewest goals conceded since 2017 and the most goals scored since 2019. During Gentry's third campaign in 2025the Majors netted 33 goals — their most in a single season since 2016.

Johnson brings a wealth of coaching experience across collegiate, semi-professional, and youth levels throughout the state of Mississippi. Before joining Millsaps, he served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Holmes Community College from 2020 to 2022. During his tenure, the Holmes women’s team captured back-to-back MACCC Tournament Championships and advanced to the NJCAA Division II National Final in both 2021 and 2023.

Beyond the collegiate ranks, Johnson has contributed to the growth of the game at the semi-professional level, serving as head coach of the U23 Mississippi Blues SC in 2021 and as an assistant coach with Gaffa FC in 2020, both members of the Gulf Coast Premier League.

At the youth level, Johnson has been the Director of Player Development for Rankin Soccer Club since 2018, overseeing several teams that have achieved success on the regional and national stages. Under his leadership in 2025, the U19 (’06/’07) and U16 (’09) girls secured ECNL-RL Central Championships. In addition the 2009 and 2007 girls’ teams earned USYS National and Regional Finalist honors in 2023, while the 2005 boys captured the USYS Midsouth Championship.

In recognition of his accomplishments, Johnson was named the 2023 Mississippi Soccer Association Female Competitive Coach of the Year and the 2022 MSA Male Competitive Coach of the Year.

He currently holds a USSF A-Youth License and is completing his USSF A-Senior License.

A native of Wilmington, North Carolina, Johnson began his coaching career with the Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Football Club, one of North Carolina’s premier ECNL programs, where he spent seven years (2011–2018) developing elite-level players.

As a student-athlete, Johnson played collegiately at Francis Marion University and Cape Fear Community College, where he served as team captain, before completing his playing career at Greensboro College (2009–2013).

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
