Gentry Johnson

Gentry Johnson was named Head Men's Soccer Coach at Millsaps College in August 2023.

Since taking over the program, Johnson has led the Majors through a period of consistent improvement and competitive growth. After recording one win in 2023 and three in 2024, the Majors finished their 2026 campaign with an 8-7-3 record, securing their first winning season since 2016. The Majors also set a 45-year program record in their '26 campaign, dating back to 1981, by conceding just 18 goals, breaking the previous mark of 20. Millsaps also scored 35 goals to surpass the previous season’s mark. This followed a successful 2025 campaign in which Millsaps scored 33 goals, its highest single-season total since 2016.

Prior to joining Millsaps, Johnson served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Holmes Community College from 2021 to 2023. During his time with the program, the Holmes women captured back-to-back MACCC Tournament Championships and advanced to the NJCAA Division II National Final.

In addition to his collegiate roles, Johnson has continued to achieve success at the youth level, serving as Director of Soccer for Rankin Soccer Club since 2018.

Johnson has enjoyed success coaching several club teams. In 2025, he led both the U16 and U19 girls to ECNL-RL Central Regional Championships. His teams have also achieved success on the regional and national stages, with the 2009 girls earning USYS National Finalist honors in 2023 and the 2007 girls earning USYS Regional Finalist honors in 2023. In recognition of his success at the youth level, Johnson was named the 2023 USYS Regional Coach of the Year and the 2022 Mississippi Soccer Association Male Competitive Coach of the Year.

Johnson also gained experience at the semi-professional level, serving as head coach of the U23 Mississippi Blues SC in 2021 and as an assistant coach with Gaffa FC in 2020, both members of the Gulf Coast Premier League.

Before moving to Mississippi, Johnson spent seven years with the Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Football Club from 2011 to 2018. A Wilmington, North Carolina native, Johnson began his coaching career with the club, one of North Carolina’s premier ECNL programs, developing players at the elite youth level.

As a student-athlete, Johnson played collegiately at Francis Marion University and Cape Fear Community College, where he served as team captain, before completing his playing career at Greensboro College.

Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

He currently holds a USSF A-Youth License, USSF A-Senior License, USSF Youth National License, United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Diploma, and various other coaching qualifications.

Johnson lives with his wife, Rylee Braden, and their son, Jack Johnson.
