Majors Take Two to Set Up Showdown with Berry

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Millsaps Majors hit the road and had a busy weekend as they took on the Centre Colonels and Sewanee Tigers on the road. The Majors had to fight hard in tough environments this weekend, but they were able to pull away and knock off both teams to set up a huge final weekend which includes a match against Berry College, a team the Majors are only one game behind for first.

With the Vice Presidential debate taking over Centre, Millsaps went over to do battle at a local high school. The Majors took a tough first set, 28-26 before dropping their second set 25-23. Millsaps was able to take that momentum and win 25-22 and 25-17 to get the win. Senior Kasey Laird led the way with 12 kills while sophomore Caroline McKey added 11 and senior Raven Scott had eight.

Sophomore Kelley Calandro has 12 digs while Scott and Laird added 10. Both senior Sarah Zito and Laird each had five blocks.

In today's game against Sewanee, the Majors took the two first sets easily 25-13 and 25-14, but the Tigers hung tough to take the next two sets 26-24 and 26-24. The Majors regained their composure and won the fifth and final set 15-12 to get the win.

Laird led Millsaps with 18 kills while McKey added 14 and Scott had 13. Scott and Calandro added 13 and 11 digs.

The Majors improve to 16-4 on the year and are now 10-2 in the SAA. They play Tuesday against Mississippi College at 7 p.m. in The Hangar Dome and then travel to Shreveport on Thursday to battle Centenary and Southern Arkansas.

The biggest match comes on Saturday afternoon when they welcome in the Berry Vikings who currently sit in first place of the SAA with an 11-1 record. If the Majors defeat the Vikings 3-0, they will take over first place in the SAA. If the Majors win 3-1 or 3-2, they may need some help from Birmingham-Southern when they meet on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, if the Vikings prevail, they will clinch the SAA Title. First serve is set for 2 p.m. and all fans are encouraged to wear black to "Blackout the Vikings."
